A good quick tropical weather source:

This shows the variation in computer model predictions for this storm and their potential impact on the East Coast

A key question (beyond the "simple" where is the hurricane going to track) is how the cold front that is moving in simultaneously going to affect the mix.

Wunderground is a great site for hurricane (and other storm) tracking!

I agree. They are talking another possible Oct 1991 "Perfect Storm" scenario for the North American East coast and shipping serving it. Drama or realisitic, I don't know for sure, but I don't think people should ignore it.

Nope. Still don't have a genny.
No biggie -- it's temperate. Good time of year to be w/o power.
I've seen lots of tree trimming crews on the roads the past few mos.
It will be interesting to see how much diff it makes, if any.

Good luck to all those in the Mid-Atlantic and environs north. On Monday here in Maryland we are in the midst of playoffs for fall sports. Heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday will cause havoc with those schedules. Now factor in anticipated LONG power outages (with accompanying school closures) and the Perfect Storm continues.

Get your toilet paper, milk, ice, and batteries. Also keep your cell phone well-charged while you have power. Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone.

Good advice LL.

You may also want to fill up your cars. Depending on storm strength & where it hits the coast, the oil refineries in the NJ-PA area (supply products mainly to that area and to the West) may shutdown. Oil product terminals from Gulf Coast pipelines (run the length of the East Coast) may also lose power for a couple of days in the storm affected area. If there are disruptions they shouldn't be close to what the SouthEast states experienced after Katrina and Rita.

Cape May-Lewes ferry moving their fleet to safer waters

"The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is suspending operations later today and moving its fleet north to safer waters because of the anticipated effects of Hurricane Sandy.

According to Jim Salmon, a spokesman for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, the ferry’s operator, service will be halted at least through Tuesday.

The ferry makes the 17-mile trip across the Delaware Bay between Cape May and Lewes, Del. Hurricane Sandy is anticipated to churn up the bay with hurricane-force winds when it strikes the East Coast Monday into Tuesday.

The last departures were on Saturday with the 6 p.m. ferry from Cape May and the 7:45 p.m. ferry from Lewes, Del."

Gov. Christie has placed the entire state into a state of emergency. Mayor Bloomberg chose not to order an evacuation as of last evening.

I have no expectations for the 2013 Hopkins team. I hope they at least meet those expectations. adapted from jhu72, 3/19/13.

Bloomer will be changing his tune today I'm sure - with 6-9 ft storm surge potential here in Eastern CT and potential 9-12 in Western Long Island Sound and New York Harbor. 6-9 also holds for Jersey Shore and Delaware Bay into Philly

Here in the CT shore, Irene was 2-3 FT surge that caused significant coastal flooding damage at that time and cannot imagine what double that or more is - likely over TWO complete tidal cycles.

Landfall looks to be around Point Pleasant NJ in Central NJ.

For reference, I was checking the beach webcam at sundown last night on Corolla Beach in the OBX. The surf had breeched the deck where the camera was and it was not fully high tide (hello? with a FULL MOON this weekend -- does the fun never end?). This did not happen with Irene, which went directly up the Currituck Sound.

Other news reports include high winds and power outages in Manteo and KDH. Windgusts from 22-47 mph. Still vacationers were checking in for their week's vakay yesterday. Remember that all this comes as the OBX considers SAndy as "passing them by" soooo for all of us in the "OH SH*T!" zone, hang in there.

I will check it this a.m. as soon as the sun is up.

We're under high wind warnings for tomorrow and Tuesday (gusts up to 60mph). Why do I know this? Because the weather radio alert went off at 0445 this morning issuing the warnings.  Nothing quite like being wakened from a sound sleep to be warned of an event >24 hours in the future!

Just looked at the wunderground tracks. It looks like it may hit land a little north of us. Good for us, not so good, as Baldo and others pointed out, for NJ and NY.

We got "missed" in South Florida, but still lost half the beach. A1A in Fort Lauderdale got washed over and closed. Good luck to all up north. Sandy's a nasty girl.

....I'm livelining a bunker for a big bass right now... right out my back door.... and I just saw a flounder in my toilet... I live 2 miles inland on the South Shore... North Shore will be even worse. I think all the water in LI Sound may end up in the main terminal at Laguardia.
:chores-mop:

Typically we're not usually on this side of the storm. There's really no place for the water to go. Sandy is showing up right on the full moon too. What a biatch!

I'm hoping everyone stays safe...except the cast of Jersey Shore. I hope they get swept out to sea, never to be seen again.
