gauges

12 sts and 8 rows = 4"/10 cm over dc using largest hook. One scallop in scallop pattern measures approximately 1 1/4" / 3cm using smallest hook, and measures approximately 1 3/4" / 4.5cm using largest hook. Remember to check gauge for best results!

How to make a gauge swatch

With largest hook, ch 14.

Row 1 Dc in 4th ch from hook (3 skipped ch count as first dc), dc in next ch and each ch to end - 12 dc.
Row 2 Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), turn, dc in each dc across 14 dc.

Repeat Row 2 six more times. Swatch should measure 4"/10cm x 4"/10cm. If your swatch is larger than these measurements, switch to a hook thats one size smaller and try again. If your swatch is smaller, try a larger hook.

sizes

XS (S, M, L, XL)
Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.
To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.

Finished measurements
Drop waist (1"/2.5cm above hip bone): Approx 28 (30, 32, 35, 38)/71 (76, 81.5, 89, 96.5)cm

instructions

SKIRT

Waistband: With largest hook, ch 86 (92, 98, 107, 116).

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook (3 skipped ch count as first dc), dc in next ch and each ch to end 84 (90, 96, 105, 114) dc.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), turn, dc in each dc across 84 (90, 96, 105, 114) dc.

Repeat Row 2 until the waistband measures 5"/12.5cm. Do not turn work after completing last round. Instead, form a ring by bringing the other end of the waistband around and working a slip stitch in top of the beginning ch-3.

Scalloped Skirt

Now the scalloped skirt body is worked.

The scallops are made up of three rounds of stacked shells that are laced together with ch stitches in the third round of the sequence.
Each shell is made by working (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same stitch or space.

Rnd 1: Skip beginning ch-3, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next dc, ch 2, skip next 2 dc; repeat from * 26 (28, 30, 33, 36) more times, end (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next dc, sk 1 dc, ch 2, join with sc in first dc 28 (30, 32, 35, 38) shells.

Rnds 2 and 3 Skip next dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 space of first shell, *ch 2, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 space of next shell; repeat from * 26 (28, 30, 33, 36) more times, end ch 2; join with sc in first dc 28 (30, 32, 35, 38) shells.

Rnd 4: Skip next dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch- 2 space of first shell, *ch 3, sc in ch-2 space between 2 shells two rounds below, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 space of next shell; repeat from * 26 (28, 30, 33, 36) more times, end ch 3, sc in last ch-2 space two rounds below, ch 3; join with sc in first dc.

Rnds 5-7: Repeat Rounds 2-4.

The piece should measure approximately 8"/20cm from top edge and have two sets of three stacked shells that are laced together by chains.
Change to middle-sized hook.

Rnds 8-31: Repeat Rnds 2-4 eight times. The piece should measure approximately 20"/51cm from top edge. Change to largest hook.

Repeat Rnds 2-4 until piece measures 30 (30, 33, 33, 36)"/77.5 (77.5, 85, 85, 92.5)cm or desired length.

Be sure to complete all rounds of the last repetition of Rnds 2-4. Work the last Round 4 very loosely. Fasten off.

Waistband Edging

With smallest hook, join yarn with sl st in bottom of waistband opening on left edge. Stitches in Row 1 are worked in the spaces beneath the ch-3 turning chains at the beginning of a waistband row or beneath the last dc at the end of a waistband row.

Row 1:
Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in first space, *hdc in next space, 2 hdc in next space; repeat from * to the top of the waistband, end hdc in last space at top of waistband opening 15 hdc.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each hdc across 15 hdc. In the next row, ch-3 spaces are worked between hdc to create buttonholes.

Row 3: Ch 2, turn, *(hdc, ch 3, hdc) in next hdc, hdc in each of next 2 hdc; repeat from * 3 more times, end (hdc, ch 3, hdc) in last hdc, leave turning ch unworked. Fasten off.

With smallest hook, join yarn with sl st in top of waistband opening on right edge. Stitches in Row 1 are worked in the spaces beneath the ch-3 turning chains at the beginning of a waistband row or beneath the last dc at the end of a waistband row.

Row 1: Ch 2, hdc in first space, *hdc in next space, 2 hdc in next space; repeat from * to top of waistband, end 2 hdc in last space 16 hdc. Fasten off.

Finishing

Sew 5 buttons on the right edge of the waistband opening. Space them to match the buttonholes on the other edge. There should be some overlap of left side edging on to right side of waistband.
Weave in ends.
