Splash Talk: News, Notes and Scores Around North Jersey from Jan. 10-Jan. 11

Paramus’ Eric Kim is a big reason behind the Spartan’s solid start to the 2012-2013 season. Coach Tim Donohue thinks Kim, and teammate Harold Choo, could make some noise at next week’s Bergen County Meet of Champions. (DEMITRIUS BALEVSKI/Staff Photographer)

Before I begin, make sure to cast your votes on the post above — or CLICK HERE — regarding who you think will win Sunday’s Big North Championships. I’m interested to see who everyone thinks are the favorites heading into the event.

Anyway, today’s news comes out of Paramus, thanks to an e-mail from coach Tim Donohue. The Spartans’ boys team is having its best season in a long time, currently sporting a 5-3 record and have won three in a row as of Thursday after suffering tough losses to Bergen County powers — Bergen Catholic, Ramapo and Ridgewood. Leading the Paramus emergence has been senior Eric Kim and junior Harold Choo, both who should be in contention for county titles in their respective races later this season. According to Donohue, Kim is an “extremely versatile swimmer” and can swim any event and is willing to do so depending on the meet. He excels in the 200 IM, 100 Free and 100 Back and has been “under 2 minutes in the 200 IM” and “under 50 seconds” in the 100 Free. “Those are very impressive times and he’s a fun swimmer to watch,” Donohue said. Kim has lost only one dual meet individual race during his high school career and he’s looking to end his career on a high note.

As for Choo, “he’s been a standout since his freshman year,” Donohue said. His best events are in the 100 Breast, 200 IM and 200 Free. “Like Eric, he is able to swim any event that we need on a particular day and has lost only one individual event at dual meets [in his career]. He, too, should do very well at the county meet this year in both of his individual events.”

Forecasting 01.12.13 — Bergen Catholic wrestling heading south

A preview of what to look forward to in North Jersey high school sports for Saturday, Jan. 12. All content below is written by each sport’s respective beat writer(s).

WRESTLING

Bergen Catholic’s returning state champion Johnny Sebastian will lead the Crusaders in their big quad meet today in Brick. (LESLIE BARBARO/Staff Photographer)

A day of quads will be highlighted by top-ranked Bergen Catholic’s trip down south to Brick Memorial to face Brick Memorial, Toms River South and Manalapan. Brick is 9-0 and coming off a huge 36-27 victory over St. Peter’s. They are led by Joe Ghione at 126 and Jared Staub at 132, Cliff Ruggiero at 145, Joe Beverly at 160 and Tyler Richardson at 170. Toms River South is 7-1 led by unbeaten returning state champion BJ Clagon at 145. Kevin Corrigan is unbeaten as well at 113 as is Joe Salvato at 160 and freshman Owen McClave has one loss at 106. Bergen Catholic (5-1 going into Friday night’s matchup against Wayne Valley), whose only loss is to powerful South Plainfield, is deep throughout the lineup, led by returning state champ Johnny Sebastian at 182. Freshman Nick Suriano has been dominant at 106, and the Crusaders also have strangth up top with Christian Jenco and Carmine Goldsack.

In other action, Emerson/Park Ridge and Bogota/Weehawken will travel to River Dell for a tri meet that will say a lot about where each team stands in the dual meet season. River Dell is unbeaten at 3-0 while Bogota is 8-1 and Emerson is 3-4.

Brian Giuffra will be writing a feature story on the Demarest wrestling team and their strong start to the season for Sunday’s paper. They are in a quad with Lodi, Ramapo and Paramus Catholic. Continue reading

Hockey: Ramsey 5, Ramapo 3

Ramsey is widely considered the best public hockey team in North Jersey, perhaps in all the state. But the Rams are taking nothing lightly. They came to Ice Vault on Friday night ready for a late night battle with rival Ramapo, and that’s exactly what they got.

Ramapo gave Ramsey all it could handle before the Rams finally pulled away in the final seconds for a 5-3 win.

“It’s a rivalry game,” Ramsey coach Bob Toy said. “And Ramapo’s a real good hockey team, and they’re playing really good hockey right now … we knew we would have our hands full and we did. Our guys just fought through.” Continue reading

Boys Basketball Drive & Dish: Ridgewood 67, Garfield 43

Ridgewood’s bench provided a much-needed spark and led the way to a 67-43 win tonight over Garfiel din independent boys’ basketball.

Foul trouble forced the Maroons to use 10 players in the first half and the backups, including sophomore guard Jon Davila, helped ignite a 16-0 second-quarter run to extend the lead to 29-13.

Junior guard Tim Nolan and senior guard Nick Simon led a balanced attack for Ridgewood (5-4) with 15 points apiece. Junior guard Corrie Brown scored a game-high 17 for Garfield (7-2).

Read more about it in Saturday’s Record.

Girls basketball: 1,000 x 2

History buffs will love this one. Saturday’s game between Teaneck and Paramus could be one of the most interesting of the season because each team could have a girl reach the 1,000 point career mark. Teaneck junior C Kayla Gibbs goes into the game 17 points shy of the milestone while Paramus’ sharp-shooting junior G Brittany Stone is 32 points away.
Stone would become just the second girl in school history to reach that plateau.

Wrestling: Ramos to North Carolina

Hawthorne senior wrestler Ethan Ramos, seated center, has signed his letter of intent to wrestle at North Carolina. He is joined by his parents: Gisele and Benny. Standing, Hawthorne AD Art Mazzacca, Principal Barry Cohen and Bears wrestling coach Bob Pasquale.

Yes, you would be right in asking when the last time Hawthorne had a Division 1 athlete sign. That question came up this morning at the signing ceremony for Bears senior wrestling Ethan Ramos.

Forecasting 01.11.13 –

WRESTLING

Becton/Wallington at Rutherford - This is a local rivalry and NJIC crossover game that could get interesting between two teams that are looking to challenge for their division titles. Rutherford is unbeaten at 4-0 and Becton/Wallington is 3-2. There could be an interesting matchup at 182 if Becton/Wallington’s Nathan Bueno, a Bergen Holiday runner-up at 170, bumps up to face Rutherford’s Jake Regina, a Bergen Holiday third at 182.

Brian Giuffra will be covering Hackensack’s match v. Old Tappan. Hackensack is off to an unbeaten start while Old Tappan is coming off a loss to Demarest. Despite it’s perfect start to the year — Hackensack is currently 6-0 — the Comets still have to prove they can win in a tight match — their closest match this year was a 27-point win — and Old Tappan should test them. Justin Barso, Amir George, Taj-Aziz Brown and Goran Krasic. Old Tappan counters with Tyler Mullen, Zach Forhlich and Dan Bendul.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

New Milford at Midland Park – The Panthers have picked up right where they left off last season, Mark Czerwinski will be there to get a closer look at junior PG Rebecca Rabeiro, who has made herself an early candidate for Player of the Year.

Boys Basketball Drive & Dish: Cresskill 60, Waldwick 48

Cresskill joined a crowded race for the NJIC Patriot Division title by knocking off first-place Waldwick tonight.

Cresskill (6-3, 4-1) jumped to an early lead and posted a 60-48 victory over Waldwick (7-2, 4-1) to create a four-way battle for the title that includes Hawthorne Christian and Bogota.

The Cougars’ senior forwards, Alex DeCandia and Dom Wilson, scored 18 and 12 points, respectively. Senior point guard Tyler Jackson made all six of his fourth-quarter free throws and scored 13. Waldwick junior guard Doug Palmadessa scored a game-high 21.

Splash Talk: More News & Notes Around North Jersey

Here’s Bergen Catholic’s John Om during the Crusaders’ 93-73 win over Tappan Zee (N.Y.) on Tuesday. (SABRINA NICOSIA/MSG Varsity)

Continuing the trend of just posting random things about the swimming season here on Varsity Aces, here are some pieces of information I gathered on Wednesday thanks to e-mail and text exchanges with several coaches around North Jersey. It’s tough to stay up to date on 60-70 teams around the area by myself, but I’m trying here. It’ll be nice to finally meet all these coaches (and swimmers) Sunday at the Big North Championships. Anyway, on to the news and notes…

Courtesy of Bergen Catholic boys/IHA girls coach Jason Schlereth, Bergen Catholic and Tenafly boys are set to swim against each other later today at 3 p.m. at the Garfield Boys and Girls Club. The Crusaders are off to a 4-1 start — their only loss coming against Demarest, 95-75, back on Dec. 18. In that meet, Bergen Catholic’s highly-touted 200 Medley Relay team consisting of Josh Sembrano, John Om, Sebastian Lopez and Liam Kelly posted a 1:38.58 — which is very close to being the best recorded time in the state this year. That same quartet set a meet record at the Bergen County Championship last year with a 1:39.01 and ended up taking seventh at the state Meet of Champions. Wonder what they have planned for an encore this year. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact all four are underclassmen — Sembrano, Kelly and Lopez are juniors and Om is a sophomore. Speaking of Om, he’s the defending county champion in the 100 breast stroke and a returning All-North Jersey selection in that event. And I’ve yet to even talk about Immaculate Heart yet this year, but the Blue Eagles’ time will come. Right now they are 4-0 and, trust me, I know how good they are. Continue reading

If you were following on Twitter today, you probably already heard the news….we are over 5,000 followers.
Ok, just kidding. The real news came from Robbinsville as the NJSIAA executive committee passed a “optional waiver” for schools to begin the 2013 fall athletics season a week earlier than usual. Instead of Sept. 13/14th, it can start Sept. 6/7th.
Let’s hit the high notes, and break down what it means to all four Big North Bergen County non-public schools.

WRESTLING: Around the Mat

Wednesday is always a big day in the wrestling world, and this week doesn’t disappoint. To get you caught up with the what to watch for and what has already happened, we’ll be doing a wrestling wrap every Wednesday that includes The Record honor role, rankings, notes and lead note.

For some reason, The Record Top 25 wrestling rankings weren’t posted online today, although they were in the paper. But no worries. We have the rankings for you on this blog plus a lot more.

For The Record honor role where we rank the best wrestlers in each weight class, click here. For the wrestling notes with plenty of interesting tidbits about teams from around the area, click here. Splash Talk: Scores and more around North Jersey

Ramapo standout Katie Murphy won two individual events — the 200 IM and 100 Fly — in the Raiders’ 122-48 win over Tenafly Tuesday night. Murphy is the defending Bergen County champ in the 100 Fly. (ROBIN GOTTESMAN/Suburban News)

These are the results I received Tuesday night plus a few boys swimming tidbits near the bottom. Swimmers, if you had a meet and your results aren’t on here, pester your coaches to e-mail me after any future dual meet. I’m going to try and recap dual meets as many nights as I can for the remainder of the season. Coaches, be sure to include final score, winning swimmers and their times, if possible, and team records.

GIRLS

RAMAPO 122, TENAFLY 48 — Ramapo senior standout Katie Murphy won the 200 IM, 100 Fly and was part of two relay-winning teams in the Raiders’ win over Tenafly Tuesday night. Murphy was the Bergen County champ last year in the 100 Fly with a record-breaking time of 58.29. Junior Julia Perry won the 200 Free and 100 Free and Lena DePrizito won the 50 Free and took second in the 100 Breast. I’m interested to see how Ramapo fares at the Big North Championships on Sunday. Forecasting 01.09.13 — Big wrestling day in store on Wednesday

A preview of what to look forward to in high school sports on Wednesday, January 9. All content below is written by each sport’s respective beat writer(s).

WRESTLING

Some great wrestling matches to watch out for on Wednesday, including several Top 25 match ups.

Brian Giuffra will be covering Wayne Valley’s match at Passaic Valley, which starts at 7 p.m. This is a Big North Independence league match between the two preseason favorites and The Record Top 10 members. Both teams are off to strong starts as expected, but this is only Wayne Valley’s second dual meet of the year because they’ve competed in three tournaments already. That could be a good or bad thing. This match should answer that question.

Greg Schutta will be at River Dell to see the Golden Hawks face off against North Bergen in a matchup of teams that are ranked among the top 15 in North Jersey by The Record. River Dell’s Drew Nirchio and Devin Garrido of North Bergen could have a rematch at 106 of Nirchio’s win over Garrido in the wrestlebacks of the Bergen County Holiday Tournament. Continue reading

Girls basketball: What’s up with DePaul?

Everyone’s been asking me what’s up with DePaul, but I wanted to reserve judgment until I actually saw the Spartans play. I covered their game against Kennedy tonight, and I knew that would be a tough matchup for them because Kennedy has one of the best backcourts in the state, and the best three-guard lineup in the county.
And it was the big difference in Kennedy’s 62-56 win. Kennedy senior guard Koryn Lawrence-Barrett had a brilliant game and scored a game-high 25 points and had seven rebounds and two assists. Kennedy senior point guard Morgan Taylor chipped in with 22 points.
Senior center Jade Walker, who left the game with 2:55 to play with a knee injury, scored 20 points and senior guard Brianah Ramos had 18 for DePaul, which fell to 2-8.
You can read about Kennedy in Wednesday’s Record.
But here’s my take on DePaul’s slow start:
