Research Interests

The major focus of my research is the investigation of factors that influence the distribution and abundance of terrestrial vertebrates. This research has been stimulated by my curiosity on the one hand about the causes of many intriguing patterns of vertebrate distributions in the Australian fauna, and concern on the other that many species have declined or become extinct with the advent of European settlement. For the last twenty years my primary focus has been to elucidate, by observation and field experiment, the factors that regulate diversity in the small vertebrates of arid Australia. Research on the exceptionally rich communities of small mammals and lizards of this region provides an opportunity to contribute to theoretical debate about the importance of biotic and physical processes in shaping population and species dynamics, and to achieving practical conservation goals.

Research Students Supervised

Since 1985 I have supervised 36 honours students, 5 Graduate Diploma students, 17 M.Appl.Sci. students, 6 MSc students and 49 PhD students. Twenty-two of my honours students achieved 1st class honours and 12 achieved upper second class degrees; two are still enrolled. All my Masters and Graduate Diploma students and 37 of my PhD students have graduated successfully, the others are still enrolled. Virtually all graduate students now work in different positions in biological sciences.

Conference Presentations

Since 1980 I have presented at least 90 seminars on my work at national conferences, and 45 more at international meetings; 27 were invited, keynote or plenary presentations. In 1996 I was the Australian representative at an OECD meeting on impacts of exotic fauna in Sweden, in 1997 I led an international review team that evaluated the effectiveness of government-funded agricultural programs in south-east Asia, and in 2005 I was a member of an international review team that investigated the management of the introduced red fox in Tasmania.

Grants And Funding

Since 1985 I have been awarded competitive grants exceeding $4,500,000 from the Australian Research Council and a range of other funding bodies. Another $1,000,000 has been obtained by the Institute of Wildlife Research since 1990 for research, contracts and consultancies on various topics in conservation and management.
