Mythic, Victory Drop 'BioWare' Label

Two of EA's "BioWare" studios, Victory Games and Mythic, have dropped the label from its studio name. Mythic says the change was a result of a new focus.

"In the wake of a new focus our studio has recently changed its name from BioWare Mythic to Mythic," the studio said on its website. "Everything else stays the same - our passionate teams will continue to support and develop our existing titles as well as working on some new and exciting projects."

Victory Games did not release a statement on the change but the studio's website has removed all instances of the name. The studio announced in December 2011 it was joining the BioWare games label.

BioWare now has five studios under its label: BioWare Edmonton, BioWare Austin, BioWare Montreal, BioWare Ireland, and BioWare San Francisco. It's unclear if more studios are also changing their names. Game Informer contacted EA for comment.

In September, BioWare founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk announced their retirement.

  • I understand wanting to have your own name on what you create instead of a symbiotic super-name that attempts to control all.
  • Boiware had those two studios under thier label?
  • BioWare is falling apart at the seams and so is the large empire they have built. What a shame.
  • Wouldn't this help sales though?
  • never knew they were bio-ware ... but bio-ware has been disappointing lately imo good but disappointing so its and with those co-founders leaving its understandable
  • Good for them.
  • purty cool name, mythic.

  • Go Mythic! Go Victory! It's your birthday!

  • Its not lost on me that BioWare's major failure (SWTOR) was made by most of the failed developers of Warhammer Online, who happen to be Mythic. I'd argue that acquiring Mythic when making their MMO was partly the reason for their failure.
  • If only they didn't regard visuals and quality of life stuff in SWTOR as unnecessary fluff. It's a shame it stole the niche from a future ultimate Star Wars MMO for the next decade or so.

    So much lost potential.

It was a great KOTOR sequel, but a crime as a Star Wars MMO.
  • Mythic and Victory existed on their own before they ever had "Bioware" attached to their name. Mythic developed Dark Age of Camelot and Warharmmer Online, and assisted with SWTOR after they were purchased by EA. Victory is the Command & Conquer team (formerly "EA Los Angeles"). From what I understand, adding "Bioware" to their name was mostly just a marketing move by EA. There has been a lot of backlash against EA for presumably trying to trick customers into thinking Mythic/Victory games are Bioware games, which probably led to the "Bioware" being dropped off their names.
  • Good.

EA's ploy to slap "Bioware" on everything and fool people into thinking "instant quality" was low - all it did was devalue the Bioware name. Mythic is a fine developer with a good pedigree; they didn't need to do that. But they always have to earn their reputation for quality. So does Bioware. So does Victory. All studios must continually aspire to be quality; it's not like you slap a name on it (or throw $75 million dollars at it, Rhode Island) and instantly get a world-class developer.

Now if stupid mainstream gamers would just learn what a game engine is. I'm getting tired of them thinking "Frostbite 2.0" instantly makes a game good. It's just the tech that powers the game, morons - it takes talented artists, designers and programmers to do something worthwhile with it, ya mouth-breathing fools.
  • Didn't Mythic make... the Warhammer MMO? Eh, nothing too exciting there.
  • so there changing there name, but are still part of bioware?

  • AHahah someone wants to distance themselves from the husk of Bioware now which has none of the original team.

  • Confusing title. That 'Drop' shouldn't be capitalized.
  • I wonder if Victory's game Command and Conquer is still in development. It has been almost a year since we seen anything of that game.
