Outstanding performances on the IRB World Sevens circuit have ushered in a highly promising 15-a-side career for Christian Wade, who is making his first senior England tour to South Africa. Two appearances in his first IRB tournament in Dubai in December 2009 preceded a stunning seven tries at George a week later, making him the joint top try-scorer in the event, alongside William Ryder, of Fiji.
Christian added two tries in Wellington and another three in Las Vegas and amassed 22 tries in seven tournaments in the 2009-10 Series. He excelled for England U20, has scored ten tries in 17 Premiership matches, including a hat trick against Leicester Tigers last September and became a member of the London Wasps’ team squad in 2011-12. He scored 14 tries in 20 games in his first full season for the club. In May, he signed a contract extension with Wasps that extends to the summer of 2015.
His CV also includes a try for England in the 57-26 win over the Barbarians at Twickenham and a hat trick in the subsequent tour match that brought a 54-26 victory over the South African Barbarians South at Kimberley.
His playing origins were as a 12-year-old at RGS High Wycombe after he had attended Hamilton Primary School there. Now in his first year of three studying Sport Science and Psychology at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, he has a representative background that features England 16 Group A and 18 Group as well as South West U16 and U18 and a loan spell with Championship side London Scottish.
His burgeoning Sevens skills helped Samurai Baracudas to win the Bournemouth tournament and Samurai International to win the Manchester competition.
Mentors include Wasps Academy coaches Alun Powell and Rob Smith, together with England’s John Fletcher, Peter Walton, Alex Sanderson and Geoff Richards, alongside Mark Mapletoft, the recent national U20 head coach.
Already, as well as his Sevens exploits, Christian has played for England U18 in Argentina, South Africa and Italy and reckons that beating South Africa at Kimberley and scoring two second half tries completed an awesome build up to the match.
Playing drums and bass, basketball and athletics and chilling with friends are his favourite relaxations. Stade de France heads his list of grounds and players he admires include Shane Williams, Jason Robinson and guess who? William Ryder – this is where we came in.
