Denunciar/bloquear a Dan

I am Ozydandius of Droid. Look on my works, ye mighty, and LOL. (This one goes out to my #Android  homepersons, mostly. +1 this post if you remember these.)

In the before time, in the long long ago (which is to say, 2007), Android had not yet launched; publicly, it was all rumors. We were working harder than you could possibly imagine on the initial announcement on 5 November and the SDK launch a week later.

My job was developer relations, but I took a much-needed break of a couple hours and spent some quality time with Inkscape to create these... things.

See, we were prepping for an internal developer launch (meaning, we were going to ask Googlers to start fooling with the APIs and give us early feedback), and I had no eye candy for the slides we were putting together. Hence these guys.

They had a brief flurry of minor popularity amongst the team -- enough to pick up the nickname "Dandroids", anyway. But then +Irina Blok (as I recall) presented her work: the bugdroid we all know and love. Funny how the professional work is of vastly higher quality than the amateur, isn't it? ;) Even so, these guys have the distinction of being the first proposed mascots for Android (that I'm aware of, at least.)

Anyway, I am doing some spring cleaning on the ole NAS server, and dug these guys up. I figured I'd share them so you can experience a thrill of terror at what might have been, and thank your local patron deity for Irina's incredible home run.

Another fun fact: that internal developer launch was called "R2-D2" which stood for "Release to Developers 2", as it was the second such internal event (and larger in size than the first.)

This was, of course, before we abandoned robots as the naming scheme (since they are mostly all trademarked.)

There are some issues with this phallic dandroid but I still like it. Thank you for putting your favorite open source business intelligence Pentaho swirls on it.

So, Cupcake would have been C-3PO instead? Then Dalek, ED-209, Futura, Gort, Hymie, Iron Giant and Johnny 5?

IMO, I'd much rather be running Johnny #5 right now than Jelly Bean +Derek Waters :)

Oh and H should be HAL 9000.

Factoid: The wide eye lens for shooting from Hal's perspective was 20cm in diameter.

+Dan Morrill That's interesting, thanks for sharing. How did desserts/sweets end up as version names, aside from the relative lack of trademarks?

+Dan Morrill So how come you forgot to celebrate along with us this past November 5th? You'll have to wait another 5 years now. Think you can do that?
Pieter-Jan Vandormael
That internal release would have been what? "m2-rc11" or something in the neighborhood?

I can't recall anything I designed looking polish right off bat.  It looks like they're throwing up robot gang signs.

The sheer scale of terror that might have come from these Robotic Wiggles is mind-blowing.  Thank you for saving us from such a fate Irina!

android you are drunk, go home

Interestingly, you got the green color nearly right. The official one is a little more chartreuse, but for a small amount of time to make an internal presentation look good, I'd call this success.

Is it just me or do the robots look like they want to kill all humans

So was the final design based off of Android from Atari Lynx's Gauntlet?
Roger Wang
Nice story.And lucky,a happy ending...
Martin Bodlák
C'mon... they are cute :) I like 'em all. (OK, current Android is their older cousin, business oriented bloke... not so funny...)
Brandon Daugherty
I would have probably stuck with whichever incarnation was named "Bender".

They kinda look like happy dildos.

no no no don't do it, HuffPo is the most unethical site out there.  They are like a content aggregator, but for news.  They take other people's work and make money off it.  The worst is when they lift an entire article from the Chicago tribune or something and then do long block quotes interspersed with "commentary" added in then sell it as an "editorial".  Don't feed the aggregation trolls
Elvira Gallegos
Haha... the red one looks more like a lobster!

hahahahah the Huffpo guy deleted his comment
