  • Nelson and MarlboroughShowers, mainly about western Nelson and the Kaikoura Coast, possibly heavy and thundery. Hail also about the Kaikoura Coast this afternoon.

South Island, rain spreading up the west coast, heavy for a time, and scattered falls further east, becoming fine in Otago and Southland away from Foveaux Strait later.
  • SundayNorth Island, a period of showers spreading from the south, then mainly fine. South Island, showers and fine spells in the west and far south, fine or becoming fine elsewhere.

Jan 17 1990

Twenty eight people were evacuated from Greytown as torrential rain flooded the area. In the downpour, which saw 170 mm of rain fall in just four hours, the Waiohine River burst its banks at the northern end of Greytown. In Kaiapoi, near Christchurch, a furniture van was flipped off the motorway into a river by gale force winds.
