‘Pirates,’ ‘Muppets’ sequel news: Disney release date update

Jack Sparrow and Kermit the Frog
OK, movie fans. Disney would like you to update your moviegoing calendar for 2014 and beyond. In a bit of release date housekeeping, the studio announced today updated release information for some of the biggest movies on its long-range schedule, including the next installment in the rum-soaked adventures of one eyeliner-favoring pirate. The fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie will open July 10, 2015, with screenwriter Jeff Nathanson handling scripting duties for the movie, which, like its predecessors, will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and will star Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. (The previous entry in the franchise, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” directed by Rob Marshall, earned upward of $1 billion at the worldwide box office.) Two Marvel films, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” due April 4, 2014 , and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” due Aug. ...

2013 films (featured image)
With “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and more sci-fi and fantasy films, 2012 was a landmark, record-breaking year for spectacle entertainment. But 2013 looks just as promising with a host of big, anticipated sequels — including “Iron Man 3″ and “Star Trek Into Darkness” — and such smart new offerings as “Pacific Rim” and “Elysium” on the calendar. With that in mind, here’s a look at Hero Complex’s 13 must-see movies in 2013. “Oz: The Great and Powerful” (March 8) Sam Raimi’s upcoming “Oz: The Great and Powerful” promises viewers a journey down the yellow brick road that will include a breathtaking array of dazzling visual effects. The Disney film stars James Franco as the man who will become the Wizard of Oz, and takes place well before Dorothy arrives in the faraway fantasy ...

‘Lego Marvel Super Heroes’ game on the way

"Lego Marvel Super Heroes" (Marvel Entertainment)
Attention, true believers! Soon you will get a chance to Hulk-out, Lego-style. “Lego Marvel Super Heroes” is coming to game consoles this fall. Lego added Marvel Comics characters to its vast lineup of licensed construction sets in April of last year, so it’s not entirely shocking that the next announced video game in the Lego series from TT Games will involve the Hulk, Spider-Man and Iron Man, among other beloved characters. Marvel and Lego made the announcement on Tuesday about the game, which is coming from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and TT Games. It will be available on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii U, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Playstation Vita and Windows PC. Unlike the “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter” or “Lord of the Rings” Lego games, the “Lego Marvel Super Heroes” game will have an original storyline involving Nick Fury calling ...

‘Amazing Spider-Man’: Dan Slott talks Peter Parker’s fate

amazing-spider-man-crop
Peter Parker’s never had the best of luck — last year, the little he had finally ran out when Brian Michael Bendis placed Peter on the losing end of a confrontation with the Green Goblin at the conclusion of the Death of Spider-Man story from Marvel’s Ultimate Comics. But with the final issue of “Amazing Spider-Man,” which arrives today, Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos have crafted a different and even more controversial end for Peter, not to mention a rather unexpected new beginning for his web-slinging superhero alter-ego. (The spoiler-averse should stop reading now.) The issue that brings the landmark comic book to a close sees Peter die once more in a turn of events that leaves his nemesis Otto Octavius wearing the costume — and carrying Peter’s own memories and experiences, too. It’ll be Octavius in the signature suit ...

‘X-Men Legacy’: Simon Spurrier’s task is Legion

x-men-legacy-6-400
Ask writer Simon Spurrier and he’ll give you a litany of reasons why David Haller, the unstable mutant son of Professor Charles Xavier, is the perfect character to anchor “X-Men Legacy.” “He literally couldn’t be a more exciting and fascinating proposition,” Spurrier said. “He’s the son of one of the – if not the – most recognizable mutants in the Marvel canon. He’s riddled with interesting insecurities and familial neuroses; he’s got enough power tucked-away in that brain of his to squish the universe like a lorry-diving rabbit and — the writer’s dream come true — he’s about as flawed, unreliable and tortured as it’s possible to be.” In the wake of his father’s tragic death, the character who once killed gods and reshaped the face of the universe is at the center of the “X-Men Legacy” narrative Spurrier is ...

‘Star Trek,’ ‘Iron Man 3,’ ‘Man of Steel’: Movie trailer bonanza

“The Dark Knight Rises” might have been the most watched movie trailer on YouTube this year, but with 2013 just around the corner, we here at Hero Complex thought it would be fun to collect the trailers for some of next year’s big releases — many of which debuted in what seemed like an onslaught of promotion in the last few weeks. “Star Trek Into Darkness” J.J. Abrams’ much anticipated follow-up to his 2009 reboot of the landmark television series beams into theaters May 17, and fans got a taste of what to expect with the nine minutes of the movie that played before Imax screenings of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” But the question remains, who is the villain that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing? Some fans seem convinced that Cumberbatch would appear as Khan Noonien Singh, the character made ...

‘Ultimate Spider-Man’: Steven Weber transcends cartoon villainy

THE GOBLIN
The Green Goblin makes his first appearance on Disney XD’s “Ultimate Spider-Man” Sunday, with an updated, re-imagined version of the maniacal villain voiced by  Steven Weber. The actor boasts a lengthy television résumé that stretches back to the mid-’80s, but he might remain best known to some for his starring turn on the long-running sitcom “Wings.” He’s also appeared on series including “Once and Again,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” “Brothers & Sisters” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” — not to mention taking on a character in director Mick Garris’ 1997 miniseries adaptation of the Stephen King novel “The Shining” that was first brought to the screen by Jack Nicholson. Hero Complex contributor Jevon Phillips caught up with the self-professed sci-fi dweeb to talk about his longtime love for Marvel, the role of humor on the “Ultimate ...

‘Iron Man 3’: First footage reveals new villain, no China

BEIJING — The first trailer for “Iron Man 3” debuted Tuesday, giving fans a glimpse of Tony Stark’s new armor, snazzy shots of his seaside mansion under attack, and a first look at Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin. One thing it doesn’t have: any hint of China. In April, Walt Disney Co., Marvel Studios and Beijing-based DMG Entertainment announced with no small amount of fanfare their intention to make “Iron Man 3” a Chinese co-production. They talked about incorporating a Chinese angle into the script and said they expected to begin location filming in China in late summer. “Adding a local flavor, and working with our new local partner, will enhance the appeal and relevance of our characters in China’s fast-growing film marketplace,” Rob Steffens, general manager of operations and finance for Marvel, said in a statement unveiling the deal. ...

‘Iron Man 3′ trailer: The Mandarin shreds Tony Stark’s world

'Iron Man 3' The Mandarin (featured image)
The first trailer for “Iron Man 3,” which Marvel released at midnight PST, reveals glimpses of a story far darker than its predecessors. The two-minute trailer implies that self-proclaimed “genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist” Tony Stark loses everything he values, perhaps including his girlfriend and girl Friday Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), at the hands of Marvel super-villain the Mandarin, brought to the big screen for the first time by Ben Kingsley. The film, directed by Jon Favreau’s former “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2″ consultant Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”), is due out May 3, 2013. The trailer (check it out below) begins with a shot of a battered Iron Man falling into snow, his arc reactor flickering on his chest as he removes his mask and reveals a bloodied face. “Nothing’s been the same since New York,” he says ...

‘Ant-Man’ gets release date; ‘Thor 2′ and ‘Iron Man 3′ will be 3-D

'Ant-Man' (featured image)
Edgar Wright’s much-anticipated “Ant-Man” movie is finally on Disney’s calendar. The film is slated for a Nov. 6, 2015, theatrical release, Disney and Marvel announced Monday in their latest scheduling update. In the comics, Ant-Man is the alter ego of Dr. Hank Pym, who invents a shrinking serum and uses it on himself. In miniature form, he’s able to sneak around and take out baddies. He’s also one of the original members of the Avengers. If you’re not convinced that the tiny character is tough enough to fight alongside Iron Man and the Hulk, you weren’t in Hall H at Comic-Con International this summer, where Wright made a surprise appearance and screened test footage from “Ant-Man.” The footage revealed a hero whose agility, strength and constantly changing size made him a clever (and deadly) character. Though Marvel has yet to ...
