BBC1 natural history series Frozen Planet has taken the National Television Award for Best Documentary Series, beating Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, One Born Every Minute and Planet Earth Live.

Frozen Planet presenter David Attenborough could not be at the ceremony due to filming commitments in China but Joanna Lumley accepted the award on his behalf from Professor Brian Cox, reading a message from the 84-year-old broadcaster before shouting "Sir David, we love you!"
