(Above) While you wait, an astonishing shot of the Shat I’ve never seen before! Wow! From “Bread And Circuses”. Thanks to Aurore! (Below) And this just came in from madman Chris Dawson. This shot is right outside stage 9. That big door lead to the planet and swing set stage.

Nice! Pretty darned cool!
looks kind of like a 60′s version of my buddy’s car.

Fantastic! Who is your buddy?
I think there is another one out there – B&W, Shatner is different pose.
First time I have seen this one too.
Hey Aurore!
That’s awesome. It looks like Shatner really posed for that back in his TOS days, I can’t even tell by looking at it that it’s a composite image. Simply amazing.
So, I guess that’s that good ol’ James T. kicks around in when he’s back on Earth.
My opinion is that this is not a composite. They rented that car for Bread and Circuses. That looks like the Paramount backlot to me.
I wouldn’t think thats a composite – is that over by the Van Ness Northeast gate?
Ah, I see. I misunderstood your earlier caption. I guess that’s why it looks so real.
Either way, it’s a cool pic, thanks for sharing.
Aha! Back between those two very Paramount buildings you can see “Blue Sky”, the studio tank and sky backdrop. Years later they would shoot the BOP ditch scene in there. That puts this near the Pickford Building, S/E corner of the lot, and makes this the other side of the studio from where they shot the show. There are good ND shooting spots there, including the little Europe section of the lot where “Patterns of Force” and “Assignment Earth” were filmed.
James T. Kirk drives a Hot-Wheel!
I’d have to agree with Doug. The light angle and light itself is so well matched.
NOW THAT..is TREK!
very cool find. is the car an unknown Roth Design?
would have been great to see the JJ kirk jr haulin ass in that down the Iowa roads..lol
thx.
This image turned up a couple of times, back in April of this year.

(And then again, a week or so later, here: http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=119775 )
No idea why it would have popped up just then, but I never had any reason to suspect that it was anything but the real deal.
The image may have appeared first in a 2008 book called “The Legendary Custom Cars and Hot Rods of Gene Winfield,” written by longtime Winfield employee David Grant.
Did a search for Gene Winfield (above) and saw this – NEVER had seen THIS one before.

Wow, Chris! That first shot is a stunner, I’ll add that to the post!
I’ve not seen any of those before. Great find, Chris!
Thanks for the shout-out Doug!
Holy Cow! That is awesome! This combines two favorites of mine…Star Trek and Show Rods. Thanks for sharing.
The car is Gene Winfield’s “Reactor”. It was actually a pretty famous car at the time, it was even on an episode of “Bewitched”.
Gene is in his ’80′s now and still building and painting cars and the Reactor is still around and has been at shows recently.
BTW ,,He also built the full size Galileo Shuttlecraft prop.
The all-new Jupiter 8! (portrayed by the Reactor…one of my favorite show cars!)
Never could figure out why those Romans spoke English, but I like their engineering
Everyone knows that traditional ancient Romans speak English with a British accent.
That comment, Doug, reminded me of the “I, Claudius” series. With all the actors portraying Romans with their impeccable English accents, when it came time for a portrayal of an actual Briton (a British cheiftain speaking before the Senate), they got an actor speaking with the thickest Welsh accent you could imagine, “boy-o!”
..and here’s the car today!

Hi Samuel! That is amazing! I’m going to have to locate Winfield’s current location.
Doug, the shop seen in the photo is here:
Gene Winfield Rod & Custom
8201 Sierra Hwy
Mojave, CA 93501-7126
(661) 824-4728

Mojave?
That could be combined with a visit to the Edwards AFB museum for a great mini-road trip… and you would drive past Vazquez Rocks, too, I think.
Much swankier than that flivver in “A Piece of the Action”.

ah there it is..yep… also on batman and bewitched it says:)

Interesting to not that Winfield also built another legendary TV showcar, the Piranha, aka The Man From UNCLE car -

So cool! That’s the first time I’ve seen this one too. The car design is super fun and Shat is looking rather Captain Cool there with it!
How about that! A photo I’ve never seen before, not even in any “Star Trek” behind-the-scenes book. Seems strange that they would bring it out to the Paramount lot just to take some pictures of it, though. If I recall correctly the car was only seen in a magazine advertisement, never in use on-set. Of course, the bulk of my TOS memories are from the edited-for-syndication version of the series, so perhaps it was actually used in the episode for a scene that was cut to make room for advertising space.
In any case, it would have been very cool to see Kirk, Spock, and McCoy make a getaway from their captors in that awesome roadster!
I’d have to go back and look, but I believe it’s in a bit of live action from “Bread and Circuses”. A news clip of “criminals” being arrested.
thats my mememory too. a black and white? newsreel bit.
speaking of “bread and circuses” anyone wake up early in CA to watch the stewart/colbert mall show?

if anyone needed ANOTHER reason WHY the 23rd century always kicks ass over the 24th… lol
surreal morning… reminded me of why i used to sit home on saturdays and watch the cartoons in the morning…..lol

Actually it is NOT a composite picture.
It is a picture of a custom car made for one of the studio exec’s at Desilu Studios. It was a common practice for the Exec’s at the studios to have actors from the TV shows being made on the lot posing with their cars.
I don’t know who owned this particular car. I do know that it was Painted by a Car customizer named Larry Watson that did most of the custom vehicles for movies from the mid-60′s to late 70′s.
I only know this because he was a friend of my fathers and Mr. Watson passed away earlier this year.
Actually, Gene built the car before going to Hollywood and has always personally owned it. I’m pretty shure he painted it himself as he’s one of the premier custom car painters and is known for his fade paintjobs such as the Reactor sports.
Here’s a link to Winfields site in case anyone wants to check it out.
http://genewinfield.org/
I should add that Watson certinly may have repainted it at some point.
Hi Vadbaxter! A really beautiful paint job that just happens to coordinate with Kirk’s snazzy wrap-around. Perhaps all starfleet captain’s were given one of these cars to tool around Terra, much like GM gave the original NASA astronauts Corvette Stingrays? Nice idea!
Doug these photos are gems! Thank you so much for sharing them with us. Classic!
The am currently writing a book for Gene Winfield about his TV & Movie cars and this car is included. It was built for a customer in 1965. It is all hand-formed aluminum and has a front-mounted Corvair engine. Gene bought the car back a year later and took it to the various Hollywood studios to show it off. Out of that trip he got the car on “Star Trek”, “Batman”, and “Bewitched.” He later sold the car which went through various owners, but he was able to buy it back some years ago and restore it.
The photos in front of the door were taken at the studio by Gene during the “Star Trek” shoot. After a few shots, WInfield was informed that only studio union photographers were allowed to take photos there so he moved the car to a cemetary across the street. That is where the greenery was located.
Winfield worked for AMT model company and built the full size Galileo in exchange for the rights to make the Enterprise kit.
Looks like something out of Speed Racer.
