What Is WP Social Reader?

We just launched WP Social Reader, a new social application that makes it easier for people to experience news and information with their friends. You'll see what your friends are reading across the site as well as the most popular Washington Post content in each major section. Since each user has a different set of friends, everyone's experience will be different.

Please note that articles you read on washingtonpost.com will not automatically be posted to your Facebook network. Rather, they will be published to your Facebook network only if you have logged in to washingtonpost.com with Facebook Connect and used one of the Facebook buttons on washingtonpost.com on an article-by-article basis.

You can have a more immersive social reading experience by installing the WP Social Reader app and can do so in two ways:

Going to www.facebook.com/socialreader and click "Go to app"

You can also install the app on washingtonpost.com by clicking on any link within the WP Social Reader module. You will see a permission box that will ask if you want to opt in to our WP Social Reader app and read the article on Facebook. If you'd rather stay on washingtonpost.com, hit “cancel” and we'll direct you to the content on our website.

Once you are on the WP Social Reader app, everything you read within the app will automatically be shared in the following ways:

  1. Within the WP Social Reader app, there will be indications that you have read a particular article. This will be visible to all of your friends who also use the app.
  2. In your Facebook profile, your News Feed may indicate that you read a particular article. This will be visible to all your Facebook friends, regardless of whether or not they use the app.
  3. On washingtonpost.com, there may be an indication that you have read a particular article within the WP Social Reader module. This will be visible to all your Facebook friends, regardless of whether or not they use the app.

Please note that even after installing WP Social Reader, you can still read stories on washingtonpost.com and it won't automatically post to Facebook unless you've chosen to do so.

If you do not want to share what you are reading, you can do the following:

  1. Click "Mark as Unread" at the end of an article. This will remove the fact that you have read a particular article from the WP Social Reader app, your News Feed, and the WP Social Reader module on washingtonpost.com.
  2. Go to Facebook's Settings page for apps and edit settings specific to the WP Social Reader here.
  3. Disable the WP Social Reader app by following the instructions here.

What About Privacy?

WP Social Reader is enabled through Facebook. When you are clicking in the WP Social Reader module on washingtonpost.com or reading stories within the WP Social Reader app on Facebook, you are essentially on Facebook. Because WP Social Reader is integrated with Facebook, information that you provide to us or that we collect is also generally accessible to Facebook and subject to Facebook's privacy policy. Facebook may also collect other information about you in connection with your use of this app. You can change what information you share on WP Social Reader by changing your "likes and interests" on Facebook's privacy settings page here.

We do not control Facebook's privacy practices. For more information on Facebook's privacy policy, please go here.

For more information about WP Social Reader, please see our FAQs. You can also see the WP Social Reader privacy policy here.

How to Disable WP Social Reader on washingtonpost.com:

Click on the "X" in the top right-hand corner of the WP Social Reader module. Make sure you're signed in to change your preferences. If you aren't signed in to one of these three registrations – Facebook, Facebook Connect or The Washington Post – then you will be prompted to sign in to change your home page settings.
