Commission Members since 1947


The First Commission was established on 16 April 1947. The members were:

I J Goldstine (Chair)
W C E George
J W Andrews
G A Monk

Judge Goldstine died on 16 January 1953 and Judge K G Archer was appointed Chairman on 4 March 1953.

The Commission's term expired on 28 February 1954.

The Second Commission was established on 13 May 1954. The members of this Commission were:

A A McLachlan (Chair)
G A Monk
G Turkington

Mr G A Monk retired on 30 June 1957 and his place was taken by Mr W A Lee. Chairman McLachlan died in April 1961. Mr Moss and Mr Lee remained as commissioners until the end of the Second Commission's term, which expired on 31 December 1961. Mr F F Reid became Chairman until the end of the Commission's term.

The Third Commission was established on 1 January 1962. The members of this Commission were:

J B Yaldwyn (Chair)
J C D Mackley
R E White

The Commission's term expired on 31 December 1967.

The Fourth Commission was established on 4 March 1968. Its members were:

H A Fullarton (Chair)
J C O Mackley
F J Gwilliam

Mr C M Turner replaced Mr F J Gwilliam from 30 November 1970. Mr J C O Mackley resigned from the Commission on 31 December 1973 and was replaced by Mr D J Russell.

The term of the Fourth Commission expired on 30 November 1974.

The Fifth Commission was established on 1 December 1974. The members of this Commission were:

H A Fullarton (Chair)
C M Turner
D J Boswell
D R Dowell
J C O Mackley
H F Miller
N G Pickering

D R Dowell resigned from 1 August 1975. H F Miller resigned as from 31 March 1976. Mr J C O Mackley retired from the Commission on 31 January 1977. Mr M F Blakemore was appointed a member of the Commission commencing on 1 July 1977.

The term of the Fifth Commission ended on 31 March 1978.

The Sixth Commission was established on 1 April 1978. Its members were:

Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Webb (Chair)
K H Dockery
H B G Hadfield

The Commission's tenure of office ended on 31 March 1985.

The Seventh Commission was established on 1 April 1985. Its members were:

Mr B G C Elwood (Chair)
Ms V S Buck
Mr A E E Clark
Mrs H McC Little
Mr R Wood

Ms Buck resigned on 25 October 1989.

Mr B H Jones was appointed as a member on 1 July 1988. Mr B J Butcher, Mr I A McCutcheon and Mr D E Pearson were appointed as temporary commissioners from 4 January to 1 May 1989.

D MacLean, A J Healy, and B R Lythe were appointed as temporary commissioners from 10 April to 31 October 1985 to review the Auckland Regional Authority.

The term of the Seventh Commission expired on 31 March 1990.

The Eighth Commission was established on 1 April 1990. Its members were:

Sir Brian Elwood (Chair)
Mrs Whetu Wereta
Mr Doug Pearson

Sir Brian Elwood resigned as Chair on 1 November 1992.

The term of the Eighth Commission expired on 31 March 1993.

The Ninth Commission was established on 1 April 1993. Its members were:

Ian Lawrence (Chair)
Doug Pearson

Barbara Durbin was appointed to the Commission on 1 April 1995.

Doug Pearson's term expired on 31 March 1996, but he was appointed as a temporary commissioner until 31 May 1996. Robin Wilkins was appointed to the Commission on 1 April 1996.

The term of the Ninth Commission expired on 31 March 1998.

The Tenth Commission was established on 1 April 1998. Its members were:

Sir Ross Jansen (Chair)
Barbara Durbin
Bruce Anderson

The Chairperson, Sir Ross Jansen, was appointed on 8 September 1998.

The term of the Tenth Commission expired on 31 March 2001.

The Eleventh Commission was established in June 2001. Its members were:

Grant Kirby (Chair)
Linda Constable
Kerry Marshall

The term of appointment for the Chairperson, Grant Kirby, was until 30 June 2005. Linda Constable and Kerry Marshall were appointed for a term ending on 30 June 2004.

The Twelth and Current Commission was established on 1 July 2004. Its members are:

Sue Piper (Chair)
Gwen Bull
Wynne Raymond

Members of the Eleventh Commission, Linda Constable and Kerry Marshall, continued in office until the end of May 2005. Grant Kirby continued as Chairperson until his resignation took effect on 8 July 2005.

The appointments of Sue Piper and Gwen Bull took effect from 1 June 2005. Wynne Raymond was appointed to fill the vacant position created when Grant Kirby resigned, and Sue Piper was appointed as the Chairperson.

Colin Dale was appointed as a temporary commissioner in 2007 to assist with the consideration of representation reviews.
