System Hinge Problems (Loose)
Situation:
- The Nintendo 3DS system's upper screen seems loose or wobbly
Information:
With Nintendo 3DS systems, it is normal for the system to have some slight give or play to the hinge. As long as the upper screen "clicks" into place, this is within the quality specifications of the system and should not affect game play.
Use the system for a few weeks to determine whether this interferes with the enjoyment of game play.

- A system screen seems off-color, fuzzy, dark, or grainy
- The system screen colors or quality differ when compared to another Nintendo 3DS

Situation:
- A system screen has one or two small dots on the screen
- These dots can be any color
- This can be most apparent when playing darker games or games with more motion (like racing games)
Information:
With a small number of Nintendo 3DS screens, one or two dots on the screen may appear to be 'stuck' on a particular color, such as white or red, or the pixel may be black/off.
- This effect is caused when a particular pixel (the dots that make up the screen) is not working properly.
- This situation is common in many LCD devices (PC monitors, televisions, cell phones, etc.)
- These issues are considered within LCD manufacturers' quality specifications.
This issue will remain limited to those pixels, and will not get any worse.
Use the system for a few weeks to determine whether this interferes with the enjoyment of game play.

Situation:
- The upper screen image appears in 3D, but the image has a slight ghost effect
- Around the edges of a 3D object you can see a copy or double image
Information:
When viewing the screen at the proper distance and angle, different images are displayed to each of your eyes. However, that doesn't mean that the images for your left and right eyes are completely isolated from each other.
The Nintendo 3DS has been designed so that there are no issues when it is used under most circumstances. However, scenes that display extremely high-contrast visuals (for example, if a bright object is displayed on a dark background) can make the lack of complete image isolation more noticeable. Under such conditions, there is a possibility that a faint ghosting (doubled image) may be visible.
There are a few steps that can be taken to reduce this effect.
- View the screen straight on from directly in front of you. Hold the screen 10 to 14 inches (25-35 centimeters) from your eyes, or 12 to 16 inches (30-40 centimeters) from your eyes if using the Nintendo 3DS XL.
- Adjust the angle of your line of vision by holding the system at different heights. Each person is different, so find the distance and angle that are most comfortable for you.
- If the ghosting is occurring while playing a game or feature that uses the Nintendo 3DS camera (AR Games, Face Raiders, etc.) try reducing the contrast between the background and the 3D images.
- Do not play against a black or dark background.
- Make sure your surroundings are well lit.
- Follow the game play recommendations included in the software manual.
- The Nintendo 3DS system is equipped with a 3D depth slider that lets you select the level of 3D that works best for you.
- Do not start with the depth slider turned all the way up, as each game or application may have different 3D depths.
- Start with the Depth Slider at a low setting, and then adjust it up to find the best position for the game or application you are playing.
Still Not Resolved?
If after trying the above troubleshooting the upper screen still has a ghosting effect, please call us at 1-800-255-3700. Representatives are available from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Pacific Time, 7 days a week.

Volume or Sound Quality Problems
Situation:
- System produces pops, hisses, scratching, or buzzing
Information:
This normally happens when the system volume is below 30%, and is a function of the way the system was designed. Because all systems are designed this way, a repair or replacement is not needed as it will not stop this from happening.
To prevent this from happening, play at a slightly higher volume or try a pair of headphones with a volume setting.

How to tell who made the accessory:
- Check the accessory for any manufacturer information. Nintendo-made products, such as the AC Adapter or Charging Cradle will often have the Nintendo logo and will feature a model number beginning with the letters CTR.
- Check the product packaging or manuals for any manufacturer names and contact information. Tip: if the product packaging states something to the affect: "Made for use with the Nintendo 3DS" it is likely an unlicensed product.

Many Nintendo 3DS accessories can be purchased in retail stores (click here for more information), or through Nintendo's Online Store.
- Accessory was purchased separately: If the accessory was sold separately, it has a 90-day manufacturer's warranty. If your accessory is less than 90 days old, and you have a dated sales receipt, please call our Consumer Service department at 1-800-255-3700 to discuss available replacement options. If your accessory is over 90 days old, you will need to purchase a replacement.
