The Defence Force has been confirmed and the glitter and rainbow paint are being splashed around as a wide variety of groups plan their floats for Auckland Pride. Who is confirmed? And can you still register? Find out here!

On Saturday 16 February, Auckland’s Ponsonby Rd will once again become the gay hub it used to be, when a GLBT parade returns after more than a decade.

Parade Coordinator Jonathan Smith has been working his rear end off planning a feast for the senses, working with diverse groups who want to take part on their visions for rainbow awesomeness.

At the moment, there are 31 confirmed floats and five still in the registration process.

“The level of the artistic ability is so very exciting and rewarding,” Smith promises.

“There are some absolutely amazing design concepts that will really showcase the talent of our community.

“We mustn't forget that it has been 11 years since the last parade so people are having to start from scratch.”

Smith reels off some of those who have registered: “Bear New Zealand, the Waiheke Island Rainbow Coalition, DOTS Family, NZ Marriage Equality, Auckland Roller Derby, Lesbian Recruitment Drive, Amnesty International, Downundergear Marching Boys and my favourite (I wonder why), the boys and girls in uniform from 'Overwatch' The New Zealand Defence Force GLBT group.”

Family Bar is also planning what sounds like an extravaganza of a float, and still has room for more people with performance in their veins to take part.

“We have a large float and have a lot of groups taking part so far and you might be able to join some of these or have your own group,” one of the organisers James Laverty says. (You can email him at jalaverty@hotmail.com)

A float is also being put together by Auckland support organisation Body Positive, which will highlight the place of HIV positive men in the community, assisted by sponsorship from Lateshift. A small team of designers and creators is already working on something fabulous.

Smith says the deadline for anyone who wants to register, whether as a walker by themselves or a group, with or without a vehicle, must strictly close at 4PM on Thursday 31 January.

“However as are limited to about 40 floats we might be required to close registration early,” Smith says.

“If you would like to volunteer and help on the day we still need stationary marshals. Best seat in the house.”
