ITV4 will screen Nissan’s groundbreaking GT Academy in a new six-part documentary series starting on 4 February.

The show, presented by Craig Doyle aims to take the fastest online racing gamers and turn one of them into a professional racing driver within 6 months with the winner awarded a place in the Dubai 24 hours race.

The journey from virtual to pro begins with a download of the contest via the PlayStation Store. The top Gran Turismo gamers are then identified in a series of online time trials using pre-selected Nissan vehicles. 830,000 hopeful games from across the whole of Europe are  narrowed down to a selected few, who participate in a National Final Event where they battle in special racing pods during a series of Gran Turismo elimination rounds.

British mentor Johnny Herbert, and presenter Craig Doyle will follow the six British contenders as gradually they are whittled down to just one through a series of knockout challenges. The winner will compete in a final challenge against other winners from across Europe.

The ultimate winner of the contest is thrown into an intensive training regime, first to achieve their racing licence and soon after to race a GT4-class Nissan 370Z at the Dubai 24-hour race.

Created in 2008 by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Polyphony Digital Inc, in collaboration with Nissan Europe, Gran Turismo Acaemy has grown in popularity all over the world.

The first episode of the six part documentary will be aired on Monday 4 February at 8pm, repeated on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
