DOD counterterrorism program underway in Germany

Program on Terrorism and Security Studies starts in Garmisch

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany – The Defense Department’s premier program on counterterrorism kicked off March 1 at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies.

The Program on Terrorism and Security Studies gathers counterterrorism and security professionals from across the globe. This iteration gathered 70 participants from 40 countries.

The five-week course is designed for military officers, government officials and police administrators currently working in mid- and upper-level management positions of counterterrorism organizations throughout the world.

“PTSS focuses on how a state can effectively combat terrorism but still adhere to the fundamental values of a democratic society,” said retired Marine Corps Col. Nick Pratt, the executive director of the course. “It helps participants appreciate the nature and magnitude of today's threat, develop a common understanding of the definition of terrorism and establish contacts within the counterterrorism community.”

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany – With a bold underscoring in the book of “first evers,” the Seminar on Regional Security finished its first run at the Defense Department’s George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies Feb. 22.

Focused on solving international crises, the 45 participants from 24 countries used the “comprehensive approach” during the three-week effort. Spotlighting the German-American partnership of the center, the seminar was the first with German leadership, according German Army Col. Heinz-Joachim Henseler, the course director.

Over the course of three weeks, participants studied conflicts in the Western Balkans and South Caucasus. Training focused on violent crises. Henseler said the analysis is vital for professional growth and gets at the heart of the seminar’s intent.

Conceived as by-product of elective sessions conducted during the Marshall Center’s former Program in Advanced Security Studies, the Seminar on Regional Security takes those sessions and built on them, Henseler said.

SRS is conducted once each fiscal year. For more about the seminar, click here.
