MICHAEL J. SAVARIN JR

BOARDMAN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Michael Marcelli at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Charles Church for Michael J. Savarin Jr., 63, who passed away Monday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Michael was born Dec. 19, 1949, in Cleveland, the eldest of three children of Michael J. and Eleanor Praskac Savarin Sr.

He graduated from Euclid Senior High School with the Class of 1967 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Kent State University in 1971.

Mike started his GE career at Nela Park in 1974. He transferred to Austintown Coils as Quality Engineer. He returned to Home Office at Nela as Quality Control Liaison for photo flash cubes. He then transferred to Pitney as Quality Manager. His next job took him to Mattoon Lamp in Illinois, where he was a line engineer for glass halogen tubes. He transferred back to the Youngstown area in the early 90s, working for glass engineering on product expansion at Niles/Mahoning. His next position was Program Manager for Niles/Mahoning and Logan Glass Plants. After completing his Six Sigma training he worked as a Black Belt, analyzing projects for product improvement. Other positions he held at Niles/Mahoning were Mix Melt Manager, Product Quality Manager and Commercial Quality Manager. He left GE in 2008 to what he called the best job ever, retirement.

Michael was an avid golfer, a huge sports fan for all Ohio teams, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his family. He always put his family first and was one of the most selfless, hard working, caring and likable individuals.

A kidney transplant, two hip replacements, heart surgery and possible cancer would not break this man’s will or spirit. He lived a happy and active life till the very end, until his body just couldn’t fight anymore.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 40 years, Kathleen Casey, whom he married May 27, 1972.

He will also be missed by his two sons, Patrick Savarin and Ryan (Allison) Savarin, all of Henderson, Nev.; his mother, Eleanor Savarin of Euclid; a brother, Jamie Savarin of Canton; and a sister, Franny Savarin of Pittsboro, N.C.

Michael was preceded in death by his father.

Michael’s family would like to thank the Doctors and their Staff from the Pulmonary Intensive Care units at both St. Elizabeth’s Hospitals for all the care and love they extended to him. A special thanks to The Kidney Group Inc., and specifically, Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, M.D.

The family requests memorial donations be made to National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman.

Family and friends may visit www.foxfuneralhome.org to view this obituary and to send condolences.
