Ruffled Burlap Table Runner Tutorial

Several weeks ago, I started thinking about decorating my table for Fall and Thanksgiving. I created my drop-dead-gorgeous DIY hurricane vases, but I wanted something to dress up my table a bit more.  However, I didn’t want to spend much on it.

So I dreamed up the idea of sewing a ruffled burlap table runner.  Burlap and cotton broadcloth are cheapo! Now, I’m not an excellent seamstress, but hopefully I can clearly explain how I made my table runner.

Supplies You’ll Need:

• Burlap 2 1/2 yards
• Lining Fabric
• Cotton Fabric for ruffle  90″ x 12 1/2″  (the length is variable)
• Grosgrain Ribbon 1 1/4 yards
• Thread – 2-3 different colors (I used ecru, cinnamon and chocolate brown)

I cut the burlap to 80″ by 21″.  Then I cut the lining (which I seamed – not one solid piece) to 78″ by 18″ or so.  I’m so not a perfectionist when I sew.  I wing it.

With right sides together, I sewed the lining and burlap together on the long sides.  Leave the ends open and turn right side out.

Note: If I was a perfectionist and wanted the reverse side to look beautiful too, I would have sewed the ruffle on before I sewed the lining and burlap together.  But oh well. Who looks under table runners anyway?!

If you look at the back of my table runner, you might also see this.  {rolls eyes}

Press each side well.  The runner will now measure approximately 76″ x 17″.

Turn under the ends and then stitch.

How I Made The Ruffle:

Press 1/2 inch under on both long sides of the ruffle fabric.  Begin pinning ruffle to burlap.  Pin 3″ or so up from the end hem.  Then pin in the middle.

Pin ruffles down…making them as equal as possible.  Stitch down each side about 1/4″  in from edge of ruffle.

To finish off the ends of the ruffle, I added grosgrain ribbon and stitched down both sides.
