Jellyfish Range in Size and Color

When most people think of jellyfish they think of a roundish looking sea creature with tentacles and an opaque or transparent appearance. This is not always the case though as this is a stereotype of jellyfish, these marine creatures come in a variety of colors and sizes.

The stinging nettle jellyfish is semi-transparent and has a body with small dots and red-brown tinted stripes going down from the middle of the body. Not all stinging nettle jellyfish have these stripes and in those which don't the body may appear more opaque or white in color. The body of the stinging nettle is around one to twelve inches or 2.54 to 30.5 centimetres. The comb jelly is very transparent with a long body and is less than 1 inch (2.54cm) to 4 inches (10.2cm) in diameter. Another comb jelly species is the Beroe which is not as transparent and is often reddish-brown or sometimes orange in color. These comb jellies are more of a cone shape and can grow up to 6 inches (15.2cm) in size.

The Portuguese man-o-war jellyfish is a rather beautiful specimen with a blue or purple colored body and tentacles which are usually dark red or purple and quite impressive in length. These beauties can grow to anywhere from 1 inch (2.54cm) to 12 inches (30.5cm) in size. The Big Pink Jelly (Drymonema dalmatinum) certainly lives up to its name. This jellyfish is commonly seen floating upside down at the waters surface and has a body size of 4 or 5 inches (10.2cm to 12.7cm) right up to 3 feet and it is a pale pink color. One of the most beautiful jellyfish is the Pelagia Noctiluca or the purple jelly as it's commonly known. This beautiful specimen has a body which is purple or yellow in color and has a size of up to five inches or 12.7cm.

The Hydromedusae is a very small jellyfish at around the size of a nickel or smaller and it is transparent in color, being almost completely invisible unless examining water very closely. A usual jellyfish is the Velella Velella or "By the wind sailor". This jellyfish has a dark blue floatation device and a transparent membrane which acts as a sail. This jellyfish is usually no more than 3 inches in size. The cannonball jelly or cabbage head jelly as it is also known ranges in size from as small as a tennis ball to as large as a basketball. They exhibit a round body with a red and brown pattern all over it which may be white at times. The moon jelly has a body with a diameter in the range of 3 to 20 inches and is clear or white with artistic looking cloverleaf patterns on its centre usually in pink or orange.

There are many amazing jellyfish in the waters all over the world, some are breathtaking because of their size, others due to the beautiful colors and patters they possess. Jellyfish are not just plain round looking masses of clear or opaque jelly with tentacles that inhabit our waters, they truly are diverse in appearance and quite spectacular to witness.
