 Long Term Care Insurance
In March of 2011, the NFL proudly introduced a new benefit for its former players, Long Term Care Insurance through Transamerica Life Insurance Company. Together with Transamerica Life, a leader in the Long Term Care Insurance Industry, we have designed a valuable program just for eligible former players. You are an eligible retiree if you are vested in the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle NFL Player Retirement Plan and you are between the ages of 50-75 years old.

This new program comes to you at no cost and the premium for the core benefit is covered 100% by the NFL owners. In addition, your spouse can apply for coverage through this program. Although your spouse’s premium is not paid by the NFL, her policy will be covered at a substantial discount provided her coverage is identical to yours.

If you already have a long term care insurance policy, you may still apply for this benefit and have the premium paid by the NFL. If your spouse already has a long term care insurance policy, she may still apply for the discounted policy.

Although all long term care insurance policies are required to go through the underwriting process, this program has acceptance criteria that is different than many other programs. You should apply even if you have previously been denied long term care insurance – you may still qualify for the benefit under this program. And, you may qualify even if you are receiving disability payments (such as from the NFL player retirement plan).

You may be wondering, what is Long Term Care and what is covered under this policy?
Long term care is the assistance provided to a person who has a severe cognitive impairment requiring continual supervision or is unable to perform the activities of daily living (such as bathing, dressing, or getting up from a bed or chair). Long term care services may also include assistance with day to day activities such as medication management, personal hygiene, light housekeeping or meal preparation. Services provided by a physical, respiratory or speech therapist may also be included. Long term care can be provided in your home, an adult day care, assisted living facility or a nursing home. Some highlights of the TransCare Policy include a $219,000 maximum benefit and a maximum daily benefit of $150.

 88 Plan
The 88 Plan is designed to assist players who are vested under the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle NFL Player Retirement Plan ("Retirement Plan") and who are determined to have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s diseases, and/or dementia, as this condition is defined in the 88 Plan.

The 88 Plan will pay the cost of medical and custodial care for eligible players, including institutional custodial care, institutional charges, home custodial care provided by an unrelated third party, physician services, durable medical equipment, and prescription medicine.

Named for Pro Football Hall of Famer and NFL legend John Mackey, the 88 Plan is the first program of its kind in this country. The 88 Plan provides former players with up to $100,000 per year for medical and custodial care resulting from dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, and/or Parkinson’s disease. More than $16 million has been distributed to players and their families through this benefit since its inception in September 2007.
