Mary Seacole

Mary Seacole was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1805. Refused an interview by the war office in London who were recruiting nurses for the Crimea in 1854, she nevertheless paid for her own trip there and began nursing the wounded on the battlefield as well as setting up a convalescent home.
