United Wa State Army (UWSA) Co Founder Dies

Xuexian Ai, 78, co-founder of the United Wa State Army (UWSA) in 1989, died in Mandalay Saturday, October 29, years after suffering from paralysis, was confirmed yesterday.

His funeral took place yesterday in Mandalay.

A member of Bre Yawng principality in the old Wa, became a leader of the paramilitary forces called Ka-Kwe-Ye (defense), formed by the Burma Army in 1964 in response to the growing threat of Communist Party of Burma (CPB), then the support of China.

In 1973, Yangon, decided to dissolve the Ka-Kwe-Ye, and his was one of the groups that became armed resistance movement against General Ne Win one-party rule.

In 1984, he formed the National Council of Wa (WNC) with his brother-in-law Hsang Maha Ngeun Wiang (Ving Ngun).

In 1989, after the overthrow of the CEC in the Wa capital Panghsang on the border with China, the WNC mutineers joined to form the United Wa State Party / United Wat State Army (UWSP / UWSA). His group later formed the nucleus of the 171st UWSA Military Region, which operates along the border between Thailand and Burma.

Xuexian Ai (U Aik said the Burmese), also spelled Hsu Hsiao Ai, Ai Kyaw Hso and otherwise, was married to Yishing Li. His stepdaughter Banyan used to serve as chief of the village of Mae Salong Santisuk near Chiangrai province.

He is survived by his wife, son and step 1 3. He had married his wife after she was widowed by the death of Sao Maha Khawng, traditional chief of Wiang Ngeun, elder brother of Maha Hsang (d. 2007) and Maha Ja, the current leader of the militia Froce people based Homong.

Other important Wa leaders who have died since 1989 include: Yilai Zhao, Li and Mai Zau Ziru UWSA and Ta Ta Maha Mong Teuk Hsang and the WNA.
