Recently in Boeing 787 EIS Category

All Nippon Airways has grounded five Boeing 787s powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine. Ground endurance tests by R-R showed the engine could be damaged by crown gears that corroded faster than expected. (Click here to read the full story posted earlier this morning by Flightglobal's Singapore office.)

R-R selected Hamilton Sundstrand nearly eight years ago to provide the Trent 1000 gearbox system, which was the supplier's first such placement on an R-R engine. On the rival General Electric GEnx-1B, which is not affected by the ANA grounding, Italy's Avio supplies the gearbox.

The 787 gearbox is a unique specimen. Boeing chose a "more electric aircraft" architecture, replacing bleed air-sourced pneumatic power for cabin air conditioning and wing de-icing with electric power. The same generator is also integrated with the gearbox and is used to start the engine. A recent Hamilton Sundstrand patent application for an integrated gearbox and air turbine starter illustrates the concept.

The ANA grounding appears to be unrelated to the more-electric aspects of the gearbox that are unique to the 787. R-R has instead pointed the finger at Hamilton Sundstrand's manufacturing process. Hamilton Sundstrand has confirmed it is "of course aware of the issue", and is working with R-R and Boeing to resolve it.

ANA-JA801A-Boeing-787-881-OKJ_560.jpgAll Nippon Airways saw its first significant 787 operational hiccup Sunday, as the newly introduced aircraft suffered a malfunction that prevented that the main gear from extending on its the crew's first attempt.

A photograph taken of JA801A while on approach to Okayama, the first of two destinations served by the 787 from Tokyo's Handed Airport by ANA, show the main landing gear doors in the retracted position, while the nose gear extended normally.

The Wall St. Journal indicated that a failed hydraulic valve was at fault, being replaced on site. It is not know if the first of two 787s ANA is operating has re-entered scheduled service.

Photos taken of the aircraft following landing at Okayama, which show the nose and main landing gear body doors hanging free from the aircraft, indicates indicates the crew selected an alternate gear swing to achieve full extension.

Boeing and ANA have not yet responded to a request for comment.

ANA began its first scheduled routes on 1 November between Tokyo-Haneda airport and Okayama and Hiroshima.

The 787's landing gear is hydraulically actuated by the center 5000psi hydraulic system. The center system and its twin electric-motor-driven hydraulic pumps actuates the flaps, nose gear and steering, main gear and flight controls. One of the two center system pumps is constantly running, while the second is available during high demand phases of flight.

Left and right engine driven primary demand pumps are responsible for flight control actuation, both of which are engine-driven pumps.

Each main landing gear has four different hydraulic valve modules, each responsible for a different part of the sequence of raising and lowering of the 787's main landing gear and associated body doors.

I'm back stateside recovering from jetlag after last week's five day tour of Asia, and I've decided to start Movie Monday a bit earlier than usual. Typically I post Movie Monday around 6:30 AM ET, but as it's just a few hours into Monday in Tokyo and Hong Kong, it was only right to post a bit a head of schedule. Today's Movie Monday is also the second installment (see the first) of the 787's entry into service. Running just over 12 minutes, we take you through the day and on board JA801A for All Nippon Airways first commercial service, it's special charter to Hong Kong. Another post will follow later this week covering observations and impressions from the new jet. Enjoy!

HONG KONG -- Safe to say my body clock has no clue which way is up at the moment, but before I retire for the night, I wanted to make sure the photos from today's flight were shared. The video blog will follow tomorrow (most likely) but this set of 144 should give you a still sense of what the day was during today's All Nippon's first 787 flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong.

TOKYO -- It's quite early in the morning (late at night) here in Japan and jetlag is right on time. With checkout from the hotel literally hours away to go back to the airport, I felt rather than tossing and turning, it was better to publish part one of the video journal from this week's 787 service entry with All Nippon Airways. Part one - "Getting There" - takes you onboard ANA flight 9 from JFK to NRT and inside the cabin with the airline's new long-haul product. Follow Twitter updates from me and newly-minted Singapore-based Flightglobal journo Mavis Toh for all the latest on the 787's maiden service from Narita to Hong Kong.
