| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

It's been a busy week for the Flightglobal Pro team over the last week, as we have been out and about in Hamburg for Aircraft Interiors to a number of high profile visitors to the US. So here are some of the highlights from Flightglobal Pro over the last seven days.

Check out all this and more at Flightglobal Pro.

On Wednesday 17 April we are undertaking a major systems upgrade of all our online services and data systems, this involves moving our systems into a cloud-hosted server environment.

This is a critical modernisation of our infrastructure and will ensure our systems remain future proof as we develop and improve them over time.

The move is also designed to improve the current performance of our services and maintain high performance levels in preparation for the planned addition of more data, content and functionality on Flightglobal.com and Flightglobal Pro.

During the migration process on 17 April you may experience some service disruption to Flightglobal.com & Flightglobal Pro. We do not anticipate the service being offline at any point but the publication of some news content and email delivery may be subject to delays.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this essential work and we are endeavouring to keep any disruption to a minimum.

If you have any queries about these enhancements or require support regarding your Flightglobal Pro account please contact prosupport@flightglobal.com.

Untitled Document

Hi and welcome to the revamped Editors' Blog. This blog is written by the senior editors here at Flightglobal and aims to give you insight into what developments and hot content are going up on Flightglobal.com, the FG Club and onto Flightglobal Pro.

The main contributors are: Michael Targett - Head of Web, Graham Dunn - Editor of Flightglobal Pro, Stuart Clarke - Editor of Flightglobal.com and Andrew Doyle - Head of Strategic Content, and between us we've got over 35 years' worth of experience working in the aviation and aerospace industry for Flightglobal.

Here are some introductions and some more details about what you can expect from this blog.

Michael Targett - Head of Web, Flightglobal

I'm responsible for the smooth running and development of Flightglobal's online portfolio, including Flightglobal.com and Flightglobal Pro. I joined Flightglobal back in 2007 as the Editor of Flightglobal.com (having since handed over the reins to Stuart Clarke).

Since then we've seen many changes on the site and on our premium information service Flightglobal Pro - formerly Air Transport Intelligence - and there's no sign of this slowing down. In fact our development pipeline is looking bigger than ever before, so I'll be posting updates about major online developments and launches, as well as the odd air show nugget here and there.

Graham Dunn, Flightglobal Pro editor

I have worked at Flightglobal since Paris air show 1999 - like many people in this industry I find myself able to keep track of time only by counting air shows - and spent the best part of ten years on the premium new service (then called Air Transport Intelligence). I have since been working as managing editor of Airline Business and took over as editor of Flightglobal Pro in February this year.

I will be updating you regularly on this blog with some of the highlights from our premium news service, as our reporters travel around the world talking to airline leaders, following the big developing news stories and providing insight and analysis of some the key trends. Keep tuned for more details and find our more about Flightglobal Pro service.

Stuart Clarke, Editor of Flightglobal.com

I'm thrilled to be flightglobal.com's new editor at a time of great change for the website and the industry.

I've worked on flightglobal for nearly six years, and in that time I've been involved in many of the site developments and covered a number of huge news events and air shows with the team.

We have many exciting plans ahead and so keep checking this blog for more details as I get them. If you have any questions or feedback regarding the site, or want to be involved in its development please contact me or in the comments section below.

Andrew Doyle, Head of Strategic Content

I have been a member of the Flightglobal team since 1995, working my way through a variety of reporting roles including overseas postings to Munich and Singapore. This was followed by a stint as a senior editor on Flight International magazine, after which I took on the Head of Content role as well as assuming the editorship of Flight Daily News, which takes me to most of the world's major air shows.

I am a dedicated aviation enthusiast and completed my degree in aerospace engineering, so I'll be looking to point you towards some of the more technology-related developments in the industry, as well as making sure you are able to enjoy all of our daily publications from the various air shows. I will also keep you abreast of the exciting projects we are undertaking in partnership with some of the major players in the aerospace industry.

Pro-screen-grab.jpgOn Friday last week we released some new developments to Flightglobal Pro - one of our premium data and news services.

We've been listening to customer  feedback and have made improvements to the site speed, navigation and usability.

We've just released the first wave of improvements with further enhancements to content and design throughout 2013.

Simplified Navigation

The navigation of Flightglobal Pro is now separate to our corporate website, Flightglobal.com.

This change will help you find Pro content more quickly and easily.

Five sections now signpost the key elements of Pro, providing the starting point to the main tasks most Pro users undertake each day.

Home
This is the same 'Dashboard' page that you will be familiar with, with quick links into News, Profile Search, Fleet Search, and Route Search, as well as links to other Pro modules, support services and other useful content.

News
The News section lists all the latest news articles and analysis, and allows you to filter and search the news by topic and keywords. Enhancements to this section include the ability to access articles directly from Pro, the ability to go back to news search results from an article page, and the ability to launch single article booklets (as a 'lightbox').

Profiles
The new Profiles section introduces a new profile search function. This brings together the Airline, Airports & MRO Company profiles into one set of results. You can search all profiles or filter settings to focus their search results on one particular group of profiles.

Fleets
The Fleets section offers comprehensive search options for searching the Flightglobal Pro database of airlines based on their fleet makeup.

Networks
The introduction of a Networks section to Pro brings together all the relevant content and functions provided by Flightglobal for network and route development. There's a focused list of routes news articles, and a quick route search tool. If you already have a valid subscription, there's one-click access to other more advanced network, route map, and capacity analysis tools. If you're interested in finding out more about these additional services you can follow the 'Find out more' link display on the Networks page.

Improved Access to News Articles

Accessing articles on Pro is now a more straightforward process. Pro articles will open up in the same browser tab and you will remain within the new Pro interface (as opposed to opening up in a new tab and within the News section of Flightglobal.com News).

This will save you time when viewing news articles, and reduce the confusion caused by mixed navigation. Contextual profile linking In order to save you time when researching airlines and airports, we've introduced automatic links within our news articles that allow you to seamlessly move through to profiles of airlines and airports.

Easy Access to all Flightglobal Premium Services

If you have a subscription to more than one of Flightglobal's premium services (Pro, Ascend Online Fleets, Ascend Online Values and Aviation Exchange), you will be able to access all services through one single access point.

The sign in system will recognise your subscription details and allow you to pick the service you wish to use. All of these improvements are designed to make using Flightglobal Pro a quicker and more intuitive experience.

In addition to these changes, we have a pipeline of further enhancements and investments in our Pro services currently in development that will provide additional value to your subscription.

If you experience any issues accessing Flightglobal Pro or Ascend Online subscriptions - i.e. you can't access a subscription that you should be able to - please email prosupport@flightglobal.com.

Dave Majumdar shot video showing recovery of a ScanEagle drone at Insitu's flight-test site in Gilliam County, Oregon, and posted it to defence blog The DEW Line.

On Ariel View, Arie Egozi pondered whether the Obama's re-election might affect the Israeli air force's plans and noted, "The Iranian threat, the civil war in Syria, which in recent days has crawled towards the border with Israel, and other defence issues mean it is not a good time for tensions between Washington and Jerusalem."

Egozi also explained how the souring of Israel's relationship with Turkey led to Elbit suing the former nation's government over a cancelled deal.

usaf-heritage-flight.jpgThe Image of the Day blog carried a photo (above) taken at the Aviation Nation 2012 event at Nellis AFB and posted by AirSpace user flyvertosset. It shows a North American P-51 Mustang, two F-86 Sabres and a Lockheed Martin F-22.

In a post titled "How the USAF shot itself in the foot over the past 20 years... repeatedly", Dave Majumdar directed The DEW Line's readers to the US Air Force Research Institute's Air & Space Journal and its article on the service's missteps in acquiring tactical fighters. Verdict? "The cost of F-22s and F-35s threatens to reduce the size of the Air Force's fielded fighter fleet to dangerously small numbers, particularly in the current fiscal environment."

comac crop1-thumb-560x420-167701.jpgOn Asian Skies, Mavis Toh blogged on her visit to Comac's final assembly centre (above).

And on Ariel View, Arie Egozi noted a US regulatory decision to restore Israel to the "category one" safety standard. "It took too much time and caused too much damage, but Israel cannot blame anyone for this - this was 'earned' with long years of negligence and ignorance," declared Egozi.

On Twitter, David Kaminski-Morrow sounded a "warning: leaving your brain on autopilot during journalism may have unintended consequences. Like public ridicule."

In a linked Airline Business blog post he recounted how he'd written an "inadvertent howler" in a story's opening line, "only for some wise-guy to send it to a BBC comedy quiz" (Radio 4's The News Quiz. That opening line: "German investigators have disclosed that both pilots of a Germanwings Airbus A319 were badly affected by fumes while approaching Cologne..."

On Image of the Day, Dominic Perry noted the 50th birthday of the youngest member of the US Air Force's B-52 Stratofortress fleet (above). Delivered from Boeing's Wichita facility, the H-model bomber was assigned to Minot AFB, North Dakota. It remains in active service.

mosquito 560-thumb-560x314-165239.jpgOn defence blog The DEW Line, Craig Hoyle paid tribute to the "beautiful" de Havilland Mosquito (above), back in the air after a painstaking restoration project undertaken in New Zealand. Canadian-built aircraft KA114 was flown the short distance from Ardmore airport to Mangere and back on 29 September. This was the first time the type had been aloft since a UK-owned example was lost in a fatal crash in 1996. "I think it's a great shame that the Royal Air Force's excellent Battle of Britain Memorial Flight doesn't have a Mosquito on its books," wrote Hoyle.

Dave Majumdar used the same blog to highlight footage from celebrations of Norway's airpower centenary, as captured by the national defence ministry.

The Airline Business blog carried a video in which Graham Dunn interviews cricket legend Brian Lara at the World Route Development Forum.

"Determination is sometimes a partial compensation for stupidity - and this has been proved again with the Israeli F-35," wrote Arie Egozi on his blog Ariel View, as he explained how the quest to customise the nation's aircraft was complicated by failure to enlist as a full programme partner.

Image of the Day carried a UK Ministry of Defence shot of a Royal Air Force AgustaWestland Merlin on an exercise in Jordan (above).

On The DEW Line, Craig Hoyle noted "a new air show reality: large players like Airbus and Boeing will appear pretty much everywhere, and small firms will take booths at their main national showcase, but many other companies (like Grob with ILA, and Northrop Grumman, which chose not to exhibit at Farnborough 2012) are looking to save money and get closer to potential punters, rather than business people and enthusiasts."
