MTV News | Supafest Review Part I

Sydney hip hop and RnB fans filled ANZ Stadium on Sunday to see industry heavyweights perform live at 'Supafest 2012'.

This was the second stop of the four date urban music festival and MTV Australia were lucky enough to be right amongst the action in the 'Bling Ring!'

The crowd were dressed for a day of bumpin' and grindin' in sunnies and sneakers, girls were decked out in short shorts and and the boys wore singlets and caps.

Up and comer and Aussie festival regular Big Sean, who got his break when Kanye West signed him to his label in 2007, kicked off the “supa” day.

Next, Naughty by Nature’s Treach and Vin Rock showed love for their Aussie fans declaring themselves “Australia by Nature.” The Grammy Award winners whipped through their hits from the 80s and 90s giving special shout outs to their fallen friends Biggie Smalls, Tupac Shakur, and Michael Jackson. Also giving a special mention to their Aussie, New Zealand, and Aboriginal brothers, they farewelled the crowd shouting, “We love y’all, this is our second home! F**k who didn’t show up!”

Lupe Fiasco burst onto stage wearing a green Chicago Bulls basketball singlet from his home town, army print cargo pants, and some heavy gold bling. “Supafest allows me to rock the same stage as the greats,” said Fiasco, holding an old style radio announcer mic.

The crowd sang along to hits ‘Kick, Push' and a cover of Kanye West’s ‘Touch The Sky’. Supported by DJ Timbuk2, Fiasco promoted positive messages to his fans, “hip hop is about love … peace … unity,” he declared before launching into his chart topping hits ‘Superstar’ and ‘The Show Goes On’.



Ice Cube blew in from the West, gracing the stage to a soundtrack of old school beats mixed with the theme from ‘Shaft’. Sporting a ‘fro with a comb, the multitalented rapper, who recently starred in the movie remake of ‘21 Jump Street,’ pleased the crowd ripping through his hits including ‘Check Yo Self’, ‘You Can Do It’ and ‘Go To Church’.

Preaching to the already converted, he raved, “West side is the best side! Put yo W’s up,” Ice Cube then dedicated ‘Gangsta Nation’ to his late friend and collaborator Nate Dogg. “There ain’t no party like a Sydney party ‘cos a Sydney party don’t stop!” he announced, ending the set with ‘I Rep That West.'



Representing the ladies, Kelly Rowland shone on stage with a Diana Ross-esque ‘fro wearing a mint green tuxedo jacket with black sequins and the tiniest black short shorts in the house. Opening with her RnB hit ‘Like This’ she slowed things down with an acapella version of ‘Dilemma’ before ramping the crowd back up with a Destiny’s Child tribute megamix of ‘Independent Women Part I’, ‘Bug A Boo’, ‘Say My Name’, and ‘Jumpin’, Jumpin’’.

The crowd were treated to a show from her male dancers flexing and rippling their muscles before the whole stadium sang along to ‘When Love Takes Over’ and ‘Soldier’.
