General NMI Council focuses on libraries for 90th anniversary
Pastors who own few or no theological books, sometimes not even a Bible, will benefit from the 90th anniversary project of the General Nazarene Missions International (NMI) Council in 2004-05. The council intends to raise $3.5 million to stock libraries accessible by 10,000 pastors in world mission areas. The council selected the project during its February 13-16 meeting in Kansas City.

Said General NMI Director Nina Gunter, "Raising the funds to provide pastors' libraries will certainly be a challenge. But this is a challenge we must undertake, as the future of the Church of the Nazarene and its holiness message are at stake. I'm so pleased to help support this worthwhile project."

In other business, Gunter reported that NMI membership increased by 11,923 to 779,340 and that giving to the World Evangelism Fund increased by $1 million to a total of $41.8 million. Among churches in the United States, 46 percent overpaid the World Evangelism Fund by a total of $1.2 million. Giving to the Medical Plan also increased, a rise attributed in part to the new "Gifts from the Heart" emphasis. Total missions giving reached $63.7 million.

The council also approved a joint project with Children's Ministries for 2003 to raise $250,000 to purchase vehicles for world mission areas. In addition, NMI will partner with Nazarene Youth International (NYI) in training initiatives for youth opportunities as part of the decadal emphasis on youth and children.

Attending the council meeting were Gunter; General NMI President Eunice Brubaker; World Mission Director Louie E. Bustle; and regional representatives Esther Ribisi (Africa); Jung Kyung-sook (Asia-Pacific); Philip Weatherill (Eurasia); Marleny Palma de Medina (South America); Ana Maria Crocker de Diaz (Mexico/Central America); Margaret Eversley (Caribbean); Margaret Rossiter (Canada); Carol Techau (Central U.S.A.); Sue Fox (East Central U.S.A.); Geraldine Perry (Eastern U.S.A.); Susan Dillow (North Central U.S.A.); Mary Winkle (Northwest U.S.A.); Jane Bowers (South Central U.S.A.); Nina Fuller (Southeast U.S.A.); and John Wilcox (Southwest U.S.A.).

"I'm thrilled with the dynamic ways that NMI promotes worldwide missions," Gunter continued. "What a joy to work with the members of the General NMI Council. These dedicated individuals certainly demonstrate their commitment to the Great Commission and take seriously the call to all nations."

Brunk, Cunningham appointed to new roles on Asia-Pacific Region
Missionaries Rev. Kevin & Mrs. Joan Brunk have been appointed Nazarene Missions International co-coordinators for the Asia-Pacific Region, announced Regional Director Brent Cobb. The appointment was effective February 15. Assigned to the Asia-Pacific regional office, Rev. Brunk also serves as the region's finance manager, Work and Witness coordinator, and "Each One Win One" evangelism coordinator, among other responsibilities. The Brunks previously served at the South America regional office.

Cobb also has announced the appointment of Floyd Cunningham as regional education coordinator for the Asia-Pacific Region. He began his new duties on February 1. More than 3,000 resident students study at the region's 14 institutions of higher education; more than 1,100 other students study at extension theological education centers across the region. Cunningham also will continue as academic dean for Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary in Manila.

RSA district reports strong growth
During its assembly on February 9, the Republic of South Africa (RSA) Western District reported taking in 194 new members over the past year, a growth rate of 33.4 percent. The Phase 1 district is under the leadership of District Superintendent Mashangu Harry Maluleka. Leading the district was the Church of the Nazarene in Ramotse, which not only showed the highest gains in membership and income but also planted the most new churches. Africa South Field Director Collin Elliott, who chaired the assembly, said, "There is a wonderful spirit of unity on the Africa South Field as a result of prayer and fasting."

Health clinic expands church's ministry in Mozambique
The Church of the Nazarene in Hokwe, Mozambique, has expanded its ministry with the dedication of a new church building as well as the management of the Health Education Project, a village clinic. Timothy Mundlane, a health nurse who also pastors the church, directs the clinic, which emphasizes preventive care as well as intervention. Medicines are supplied through the support of Nazarene layman Marc Boyd and his wife. Boyd, who is from the United States, said that the clinic has trained 150 community health workers in basic health care. Hokwe is located on the floodplains of the Limpopo River in southern Mozambique and is home to about 12,000 people.

Seminario Nazareno em Mozambique welcomes students
Students from 9 of Mozambique's 10 provinces converged on the Seminario Nazareno em Mozambique in Maputo this week for the beginning of classes. Principal Paul Sueia welcomed the students in an opening chapel service.

Among the group were seven new couples from Area 3, the largest group to date from the Tete area. According to missionary Jon Scott, more students arrived than could be immediately housed on campus. Campus housing, which can accommodate 25 married couples, includes reed structures that can be constructed quickly.

The Church at Work & Witness
Southern Nazarene University's 2001-02 Commission Unto Mexico trip has been pronounced a success. The weeklong event began when more than 180 volunteers gathered in El Paso, Texas, on December 26, 2001, before deployment to Juarez. Organized into teams, the volunteers spread out across Juarez to work on eight construction projects, hold medical clinics, and lead Vacation Bible School in 11 neighborhoods.

"Work and Witness trips like this always tend to have multiple benefits in addition to remodeling or building churches or houses. The greatest benefit is the effect it has on us," said Mike Murphy, an employee of Boeing and a member of the Choctaw, Oklahoma, Church of the Nazarene.

"God is at work in Mexico. And even though there were language barriers during our worship services, the spirit of the Lord was there. Many people lined the altars as we sang many new songs in Spanish," said high school senior Marissa Phelps.

Monterrey is the destination for the next Commission Unto Mexico trip, scheduled December 27, 2002-January 3, 2003. Cost is about $489 from the departure site, McAllen, Texas. Discounts for families and pastors are available. Further information is available by visiting www.snu.edu/mexico or by contacting Howard Culbertson, co-director of the annual Commission Unto Mexico initiative, at 405-491-6693.

Personal Note
Dave and Kim Hane, missionaries to the Philippines, have announced their adoption of an infant daughter. Nine-month-old Joy Katherine Hane joined her mom and dad and big brother, six-year-old Jonathan, in December 2001. The legalization process will not be complete until later this year, but, said Dave Hane, "She is 'ours' and we are rejoicing in God's blessing!"
