[Update: Here’s a frame grab from YouTube.]

Here’s a series of mystery photos from reader Matthew Harris. He says they “are photos taken on the set of the TV  show, "Hullabaloo." I have a pal that was a musician on the show & he  snapped these, but has no idea who they are.”

And yes, the first thing I thought of was the Beatles “butcher” cover on "The Beatles Yesterday and Today." Although I’m the right vintage, I never watched “Hullabaloo” or “Shindig,” so I’m not much help.

Paul Coates and Matt Weinstock, Jan. 21, 1961

  Jan. 21, 1961, comics

Jan. 21, 1961: Paul Coates has a terrific item on a radio announcer whose life fell apart after he  lost his job because the station went to rock ‘n’ roll.

Charley used to patronize a place on Hill Street near 5th where one doughnut and coffee were 10 cents. But it became a hangout for beatnik types who would dawdle for hours over their cups of java, crowding out the regulars. The place recently changed ownership and the price was raised to 16 cents. Now everything is back to normal, Matt Weinstock says.

DEAR ABBY: How does a married woman, 29, cope with a 14-year-old neighbor girl who hangs around her husband constantly? The girl is as physically mature as I.

Teena Marie, 1956 -- 2010: 'I wish I was colorless'

  Oct. 19, 1980, Teena Marie

Oct. 19, 1980, Teena Marie

Oct. 19, 1980: Some people refuse to believe that Teena Marie is white, Dennis Hunt writes. "I tell them I'm white but they think I'm black and I'm trying to pass for white.... This is white skin. I'm not trying to fool anybody."

She also said: "I'm a different kind of person. Blacks and whites don't really react in any special way to me. I don't get anything negative from blacks and not really anything negative from whites now. But I will say it was different before I started getting some popularity. I don't think it was prejudice from whites as much as ignorance of something they didn't know much about. You know, I wish I was colorless sometimes."

Dec. 9, 1980: Former Beatle John Lennon, 40, who led a revolution in popular music that captured the imagination of an entire generation, was shot to death Monday outside his exclusive Manhattan apartment house.

He was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, less than a mile from the Dakota, the famous apartment building where he lived with his wife, Yoko Ono. Doctors pronounced him dead at the hospital.

Police announced early today that....

Ritchie Valens and ‘Donna’

  Feb. 5, 1959, Donna Ludwig

Feb. 5, 1959: Here’s a story I neglected to post in my original coverage of “The Day the Music Died,” an interview with Donna Ludwig of Granada Hills, the subject of Ritchie Valens’ song “Donna.”

The Times said: While in one of their long telephone conversations one night last September, Donna said, she chided him about writing that promised song for her. "While we were talking, right there on the telephone, he wrote the words to 'Donna' and he read them to me.

"He called me the next night and sang the song to me and played the guitar. It was wonderful. I didn't believe it was going to be recorded."

Bob Dylan in San Francisco, 1980

  Nov. 11, 1980, Bob Dylan

Nov. 11, 1980: Robert Hilburn writes about Bob Dylan playing at San Francisco’s Warfield Theater in a concert that emphasized his “born-again” Christian material rather than his standards.

”Unwilling to turn himself into a museum piece, he kept the emphasis for the rest of the show on the new Christian numbers, just slipping in an occasional oldie or a surprise like a duet with Clydie King at the piano on “Abraham, Martin and John.’ ”

The concert ended after two hours, angering many people in the audience. “Rip-off,” shouted one disgruntled fan. “If Bruce Springsteen can give us four hours, he can at least give us two,” grumbled another.

Being a Celebrity Weighs So Heavily

Paul Coates    Since everyone else is hesitant to say it, I'll say it myself.

    I'm a celebrity.

It's been a long, hard, often discouraging fight to reach the top.  But, really, I've been a brick through the whole thing.

I bore no grudge against Ralph Edwards even though "This Is Your Life" never once considered mine.

I continued to spend large chunks of my expense account at the Brown Derby even though Bob Cobb never beseeched me for an autographed picture to put up on the wall.

I will still admit, under pressure, that Ed Sullivan is a warm, glib personality kid despite the fact that he has never introduced me from the audience.

But now, I don't need them.  Any of them.

On the Road With Linda Ronstadt, April 20, 1980

image

April 20, 1980, Linda Ronstadt

April 20, 1980: Linda Ronstadt tells Robert Hilburn, “A lot of musicians mistakenly think you're supposed to know everything about your craft at age 18 just because a couple of geniuses, like Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger, seem to have it all together at that age. They don't accept the fact that most of us need time to develop our skills.

“The result for me was that I always used to worry because I didn't think I could sing well enough. Looking back, I realize I just didn't know enough about singing to be satisfied. I've finally realized that this is what I do for a living and that I do it pretty well.”

GOP Loses Voting Strength, Poll finds

March 20, 1960, Gallup Poll

March 20, 1960: The Gallup Poll says: “…the Republican Party nationwide continues at one of its lowest ebbs in basic voting strength.” I have to wonder whether results like this set off any alarms among Republicans. Perhaps later stories will provide an answer. It certainly won’t come from Times political editor Kyle Palmer, who continues to write as if Vice President Richard Nixon will be virtually uncontested in the presidential election.
