Cricket
An annual Cricket series between the Parsees and the Europeans was started in 1892 with two matches being played in Bombay (Mumbai) and (Poona) Pune. From 1907 to 1911, the tournament turned into a triangular contest when Hindus joined in. Then it became quadrangular with the entry of Mohammedans in 1912. A fifth team, the east, was added in 1937 and it became the Bombay Pentangular. The tournament was abandoned in 1945 after Mahatma Gandhi alleged that it had a communal character.
First victory
India, led by Vijay Hazare, defeated England by an innings and eight runs on February 10, 1952 at Chennai. Highlights included centuries by Pankaj Roy (111) P.R.Umrigar (130*) and 12 wickets for 108 by Vinoo Mankad. Scores: England 266 and 183; India 457 for nine declared. Maidens in a row R.G.Nadkarni bowled 21 successive maidens for 126 balls (a total of 131 balls) without conceding runs on the third day of the first Test between India and England at Chennai in Jan 1964. His first analysis reads 32 overs, 27maidens, five runs, no wicket.
Lowest score
The lowest ever score was 211 runs by Muslims vs. Europeans in the Quadrangular at Pune, Sept 9-11, 1915. There were nine `ducks’ the best scorer being `extra’ with nine! Frank Tarrant had figures of five for six runs in seven overs. Harry Simms had four for two in three overs.
Highest individual score
B.B.Nimbalkar scored 443 not out in a Ranji Trophy match between Maharashtra and Kathiaawar at Pune on Dec 16-18, 1948. His 8hrs and 14 minutes innings included 50 boundaries and one six. His second wicket stand of 455 in the same match with Kamal V. Bhandarkar was a world record till 1974.
WR: Centuries in both innings, same players. Vijay MM. Merchant (143 and 156) and D.G.Phadkar (131 and 160) playing for Mumbai and Madhu R. Rege (133 and 100) for Maharashtra scored a century in each innings in the same match in 1948-49.

There were nine individual 100s—five from Mumbai and four from Maharashtra in their clash in 1948. Nine centuries were also scored in a Duleep Trophy match between West Zone (six) and South Zone at Mumbai 1986-87.
Highest portions of Boundaries
V.Telang scored 12 fours in his score of 49 in the match between Vidharbha and Maharashtra in Pune in 1972-73. Earlier K.S.Ranjitsinghji (47) scored 11 fours in the Gentlemen vs. Players at Lords’ in 1896.
Best on debut
Vasant B.Ranjane took nine for 35 for Maharashtra against Saurashtra at Pune in 1956-57.
Highest match aggregate
An agtr4eate of 2,376 runs for 38 wickets was scored in the match between Maharashtra (407 and 604) and Bombay (651 and 714 for eight declare) at Pune in 1948-49. The match played for seven days (March 5-11, 1948) resulted in an average of 62.52 runs per wicket. The second highest aggregate was when Bombay and Holkar together scored 2,078 runs for 40 wickets at Mumbai in 1944-45.

Khandu M. Rangnekar scored 50* off his first 17 balls with 1`1 fours and two threes for Maharashtra vs. Western Indian States t Pune in 1939-40.
Most 50s (innings)
Seven batsmen scored 50 or more in the match between Maharashtra (798) and Northern India at Pune in 1940-41 – R.V. Bhajekar 120, S.W. Sohoni 68, V.S.Hazare 65, C.T.Sarwate 63, Y.N. Gokhale 75, D.B. Deodhar 196 and K.M. Jadhav 115. This feat was repeated in the Holkar vs Mysore match at Indore in 1945-46.
Four wickets in four consecutive balls
Sadanand N. Moholtook four wickets in four balls for Board of Control President’s XI against the Minister for Small Savings XI at Pune in 1965-66. S.N.Saini playing for Delhi repeated the feat but over two innings against Himachal Pradesh in 1988-89.
Hat trick on debut
V. B. Ranjane of Maharashtra had a hat trick against Saurashtra at Pune in 1956-57.Mehboodullah, Salil Ankola, J.Srinath and S.P.Mukherjee have all emulated this this feat.
First Triple Century
Vijay hazare scored 3`16 not out in 387 min with 37 fours for Maharashtra vs Baroda at Poona on Jan 21, 1940 in a total of 650 for nine. This was the first triple century in Ranji Trophy and also the first in any Indian first class match.

Most individual centures (innings)
Six centuries were scored for Holkar against Mysore in 1945 at Indore in a total of 912 for eight. They came from K.V.Bhandarkar (142), C.T.Sarwt (101), M.M.Jagdale (164) C. K. Nayudu (101) and B.B.Nimbalkar (172) and R.P. Singh (100).

B. B. Nimbalkar (Maharashtra scored 443* against Kathiawar at Pune on Dec 16-18 1948. He hit one six and 50 fours and stayed at the crease for 8 hrs and 14 mins.
Most ducks
Seven batsmen were out for a `duck’ in both innings in the Maharashtra vs Bombay match at Mumbai in 1961-62. This feat was repeated by J & K against Delhi at Delhi in 1963-64.
