United Kennel Club Announces the Recognition of the Olde English Bulldogge

Kalamazoo, MI. April 12, 2013. The United Kennel Club welcomes the Olde English Bulldogge to its list of recognized breeds, effective January 1, 2014. The breed will be in the Guardian Dog Group.The breed was originally accepted into the Canine Developmental, Health and Performance Registry (http://www.cdhpr.com/CDHPRWeb.nsf/WebPages/Home) approximately five years ago, and recently fulfilled the requirements for full UKC recognition.
The Olde English Bulldogge was developed in the early 1970’s by David Leavitt of Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Mr. Leavitt’s goal was to recreate a Bulldog with the looks, health and athleticism of the 18th Century Bulldog which was originally created for the English sport of bull baiting between the years 1100 to 1835. The foundation of this breed’s re-creation consisted of crosses of half English Bulldog, one-sixth Bullmastiff, one-sixth American Pit Bull Terrier, and one sixth American Bulldog. As a result of that breeding plan, Mr. Leavitt’s goal was achieved and deemed a success by 1985.
The Olde English Bulldogge is a medium sized dog with great muscular strength, stability, athleticism and intelligence. The Olde English Bulldogge bonds closely with their owners and family, including other household pets and children; however, they can be territorial and should be introduced to other pets, dogs and children with supervision and care. Although they have attained much success in conformation, obedience and weight pull as well as protection and therapy work, they were bred to be first and foremost a companion.
