Bolivarian Games: Soccer Tournaments

History

The Bolivarian Games are a multisports competion (like the Olympic Games) that
was conceived back in 1935 during the plannification of Bogotá´s fourth
centenary celebrations, due to take place in 1938. They are ruled by ODEBO
(Organización Deportiva Bolivariana).

These games honor general Simón Bolívar, who at the beginning of the 19th century
freed the territories of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela from
Spanish rule. Together with Panama (which later separated from Colombia) all
these countries are the eligible nations for the Bolivarian Games. The first Games
took place in 1938. Although irregular at the beginning, since 1973 they take
place every four years, the year after the Olympic Games. For the 6 countries,
Bolivarian Games are the first step on their olympic cycle.

Soccer is among the sports on these games, but full National Teams participated
only on the first edition. After that mostly were Amateur or Youth Teams. Since
1993 the soccer tournament is played by U-17 National Teams.

In 2005 a Women tournament (played by A National Teams) was added.
