Biography

Duluth, Minnesota, United States (1959 – present)

Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota, United States) is an American musician, and artist whose position in popular culture is unique.

Dylan started his musical odyssey in 1959 and much of his best known work is from the 1960s, when he became an informal documentarian and reluctant figurehead of American unrest. Some of his songs, such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changin’”, became anthems of the anti-war and civil rights movements. His song “Like a Rolling Stone”, released in July of 1965, was named “The Greatest Song of All Time” by Rolling Stone magazine in 2004, placing #1 in a list of 500 titles. Dylan remains an influential and popular artist; his most recent album of new songs, 2009’s Together Through Life, reached #1 on the charts in the US, Britain, France and several other countries.

Bob Dylan’s strong influence over the past few years is becoming even more prominent amongst a growing group of younger emerging artists such as George Ellias, and Devendra Banhart.

Dylan’s early lyrics incorporated politics, social commentary, philosophy and literary influences, defying existing music conventions and appealing widely to the counterculture of the time. While expanding and personalizing musical styles, Dylan has shown steadfast devotion to traditions of American song, from and / to and , to Gaelic balladry, even , and .

For some reason I just remembered that I read on Expecting Rain the account of someone who said he'd seen Dylan come to Burger King and order a burger specifically with no pickles. No way of knowing for sure if it's true but it's funny to think that he doesn't like pickles.

Up on the white veranda ... she wears a necktie and a Panama hat. Her passport shows a face from another time and place - she looks nothin’ like that. And all the remnants of her recent past are ... scattered in the wild wind!

Oh man, how beautiful the 1984 Tangled Up in Blue is. And crazy how at the show from Offenbach I'm listening to, it's this gem of nuance and feeling sandwiched between boring, obligatory versions of Don't Think Twice and It's Alright Ma. If anyone ever asked me why I don't think performing artists should play anything they feel they "have to" play, I'd have 'em listen to that three-song sequence.

There's a nice lengthy chapter on Willie McTell in Sean Wilentz's book. The photos got missing in the process of copying the text to Word, but if you're interested in the story, it's worth a read.

The next Bootleg Series will cover the whole 1969—1973 period! There could be some great stuff there. Domestic-bliss pastoral/country Bob is really good stuff.

How about that Blind Willie McTell song, huh... devastating. There are a lot of songs out there with apocalyptic conceits, mostly Dylan's or obviously inspired by him, but here's one that actually sends a shudder of terror down my spine. And it's so beautifully roundabout! We learn of the arrow mark in the first line, but from there on, it's just scattered scenes and hushed observations, yet together it creates a scene far more disturbing than anything explicit would've been.
