Green Smoothie: A Raw Food Treat

By

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I want to share with your my absolute favorite green smoothie.

Green smoothies are one of the easiest ways to get raw greens and fruits into your diet. And if you get the fruit to greens ratio down, there isn't even a strong greens taste if you're turned off by that. This smoothie tastes like a delicious fruit smoothie, and just happens to have an added green nutrient kick.

There are many variations, and you can always tweak the recipe for the fruit and greens you have on hand. I would just suggest making sure one of your fruits is very sweet. Only using berries usually produces a decidedly green taste.

If you're looking for other holiday-appropriate treats to try, Gluten Free Goddess has a fantastic list of St. Patrick's Day recipes including Irish Soda Bread!

Green Smoothie
Ingredients

Feel free to adjust or change these depending on your personal tastes

Greens: Kale and spinach
Fruit (preferably frozen for texture): strawberries and bananas.
Optional: oranges and mangoes.

Directions
Fill your blender about 1/3 of the way with frozen strawberries and bananas (and any other fruit you'd like). The texture of the finished smoothie is much better if the fruit is frozen, but if it's not you'll just get more of a juice. Fill up with cold water until most of the fruit is submerged (use less water for fresh fruit).

Wash your greens. Feel free to cut off the woody stem of the kale leaves. Start with a few kale leaves and a handful of spinach.

Blend. Taste. Not enough kale? Add more! I usually end up doing equal parts fruit and greens. I actually like mine with a bit of a citrus kick, so feel free to add all those local oranges you have sitting around your kitchen.

    1. Ha - thanks! I meant to add how much water to add. I just added it to the directions.

You can definitely add a juice, and I think orange juice would be nice. If you're only using berries, I would definitely do an orange juice. However, the bananas are sweet enough that you can use water and still get a nice fruit taste.
