Cane had the job of sniffing out explosives in the war-torn country of Afghanistan.

He died when he and his handler were hit by a roadside bomb days before Christmas 2010.

Medics battles in vain to save the life of Cane's handler and constant companion, Lance Corporal William Crouse, 22, for an hour.

The US Marine's last thoughts were for his dog. His colleagues reported that as he was being evacuated from the scene of the explosion by helicopter he asked them to make sure Cane was also put in the Blackhawk.

At the time, Cane became the fifth US Marine dog to die through Improvised Explosive Device blasts in Afghanistan.

In April 2011, both Lance Corporal Crouse and Cane were remembered in the annual South Carolina Fallen Soldiers Ceremony in Columbia.

The Marine's mother, Nancy Siders, said: “They were like two peas in a pod."

She added: "Together they served. Together they died. Together they live in Heaven.”
