Target was one of three stray dogs from Afghanistan who thwarted a homicide bomber when he walked into an American military base in February 2010.

The man appeared to be heading for the barracks where there were some 50 soldiers.

The three dogs attacked the bomber and as a result when he detonated his bomb he wasn't close enough to the soldiers to kill any of them.

One of the dogs - named Sasha - was badly hurt and had to be euthanised. But Target and the other dog - Rufus - were rewarded by being brought back to America to start new lives with forever families.

Target settled in with the Young family in Phoenix, Arizona, in July 2010. Sergeant Terry Young was an Army medic who had been at the barracks when the dogs attacked the bomber and had helped treat those injured.

Sadly, Target managed to escape from the family's backyard on the afternoon of Friday November 12, 2010, and although Sgt Young found out which animal shelter she had been taken too - and paid the fee online to reclaim her that evening - she was put to sleep by a shelter employee.

The Shelter has admitted that it appeared correct proceedures were not followed and Target was put to sleep by mistake on the Monday morning just before Sgt Young arrived to collect her.

Target's bravery had been celebrated on news channels across the world and she had appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and been awarded an award as Hero Dog Of The Year.

Sgt Young told The Arizona Republic newspapper: "I just can't believe that something like this would happen to such a good dog."

Many soldiers form strong bonds with the stray dogs who gather round military bases in Afghanistan.

The sad story has led to calls on internet websites and social media platforms like Facebook for changes in procedures at animal shelters to stop this happening again.

Your memories and messages

I have found a petition online which you can sign for reform of the animal shelter policies in memory of Target - http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/letstarget-the-animal-shelters-for-refo...

Hope some good comes from this awful thing.

RIP Target - much love to the Young family. xxxx

I am so sorry for the Young family's loss.

I only hope some good comes out of this tragedy and the procedures at all animal shelters are tightened up so this can never happen again to another dog.

Such a sad story. Bless Target and her family. I hope they recover from this terrible blow.

It makes me glad we have organisations like Dogs Trust in the UK who never put a healthy dog down.
