Moving to London’s Home Counties

If you’re moving to London for work but would consider commuting from outside the city for its quality of life, Surrey is a popular choice. Located just southwest of Greater London, Surrey is an affluent county with a population of over one million people across over 20 towns. It has the highest cost of living in the UK outside of London, with a fair proportion of millionaires and many residents working in the financial services industry.

Home to many horses as well as people, Surrey makes for a peaceful life of fresh air and rural escape, ideal for any number of outdoor recreational activities and excursions. England’s most wooded county, Surrey’s dynamic landscape is likewise characterized by the chalk hills of the North Downs, which extend west to east from Farnham to Dover. The chalk-hill ridge effectively divides Surrey in two; whereas the northern half is predominantly flat, the southern half is comprised of the Surrey Hills in the west and the Low Weald plain rising up to High Weald in the east. And since much of the county is situated within the Green Belt, the amount of new building development is restricted.

There are many reasons why expats in particular would benefit from looking into Surrey apartments versus London housing. To start, if you’re moving to London with a family, Surrey has some of the best state schools in the UK, and among its 100+ independent schools, several are international schools offering the International Baccalaureate degree. Surrey also provides its share of history, culture, and recreation if you want to avoid raising your children in an inner-city environment—boasting championship golf courses, Ascot Racecourse, and Windsor Castle (among other choice sites), the county holds its own as a destination for education and leisure. Though property can be pricey, there’s a variety of modern builds and period homes to choose from at a range of rents, and they’ll likely have more interior and outside garden space than London flats could offer. As for traveling home or elsewhere for business or pleasure, Surrey also has good access to Heathrow International and Gatwick airports.

A few towns that have been popular among expats are Cobham, Egham, Weybridge, Woking, and Virginia Water (the Wentworth Estate in particular). And if you’re considering Guildford, Worplesdon is a nearby hidden (and more affordable) gem. Regardless of where you look for Surrey apartments, most towns are situated within a 45-minute commute to either London Waterloo or Victoria stations by train. The South Western and Brighton Main Lines link Surrey to London, with major Surrey stations being in Woking, Guildford, Epsom, and Redhill. The county also benefits from a good road network, including the M25, M3, and M23.

Finding Surrey Apartments

Moving to London doesn’t mean having to live there. That is to say, if you’re relocating for a job in the city, you can still always commute in if you find that houses in London come at too big a price—either monetarily or figuratively speaking in terms of their safety, quality, or commute.

So perhaps if you’re looking at flats for rent in London’s outer zones anyway to find more space or save money, it’s worthwhile to expand the search to Surrey apartments. And if you’re relocating to the area for a job in Surrey given all the multinationals headquartered there, then even better reason to live there instead of commuting out from London.

Yet just as we encounter every day in the London rentals market, UK estate agents don’t use MLS to share their listings with other agencies—so you’d have to visit several separate agencies out in Surrey to conduct a thorough search. We want your viewings to be exhaustive, not exhausting, so we overcome inefficiencies in the market to show you 18-25 Surrey apartments in only one day. That’s extensive enough to show you what’s out there for your budget, time frame, and other expectations, and fast enough to save you precious time and money in temporary housing.

Most importantly, our personalized attention is centered on you from beginning to end. We tailor our complete suite of relocation services around your unique needs and serve as a supportive guide through the whole process of moving to the London area, never leaving your side until you feel at ease and at home.
