  1. WARNING FELLOW PATRIOTS: Please do yourself a favor and review the AOW (Any Other Weapons) provision of the National Firearms Act prior to printing this weapon. In its current form, the barrel in the CAD file appears to have a smooth bore. Printing a weapon with such a barrel could be interpreted by the ATF as “creating an AOW”, which is an act requiring special registration, and possibly even possession of a Federal Firearms License. As trivial and arbitrary as this law may seem, it’s not a law you want to be be caught breaking.

Kudos to all involved in this project for making the Second Amendment a physical right. You’re on the right side of history.

    • The Liberator is NOT an AOW. For it to become an AOW, the smooth bore pistol must be designed, or redesigned to fire a shotgun shell. In any pistol caliber this would be regarded as a smooth bore pistol and is not an NFA item.

  2. though the senate acts quickly, it obviously isn’t going to do anything “we must make it illegal to make this incase someone makes it and does to do something illegal with It!” this is even more stupid and unenforceable than most gun control laws. Banning home manufacture cant really have any effect, because you can’t transfer the firearm, and anyone who want’s to break the law with it will print it as well, it doesn’t even make it any harder, just illegal, this is pretty much unique among laws that control dangerous things rather than actions.

  3. The issue with the lack of rifling in the barrel is moot in that old school scratch rifling can be done with a stainless steel wire brush on the plastic barrel and while this could be done and would meet the BATFE requirement, it would not impart any spin to the bullet. So it would be a waste of time other then to avoid the AOW category. it would be nice to know the pattern and location of the metal the was inserted in to the body of the weapon to avoid the non metal weapon rule.
Bravo on the “LIBERATOR” project keep up the good work.
I am the descendant of patriots, terrorists, and freedom fighters. I am not ashamed of that or of the founding father that were branded “terrorists” by the English Crown they were freedom fighter. One of my ancestors was involved in forcing the king to sign “The Magna Carta”. So my ancestors have been a royal pain in the ass to tyrants (English Crown and others) for nearly 800 years.
I hope that my rifle can provide that same service to any tyrant that may try to oppress us and grant the gift of liberty to my descendants no matter the cost.
At least I know I’m in good company.

  4. Perhaps a design for a muzzle loader, then. There are no restrictions on the home building of muzzle loading weapons. As this is a single shot, and smooth bore, that should be possible.

  5. This is awesome. I love the idea of this pistol. However, I think the most ideal round for a plastic pistol is not .22 but a .410 shotgun shell because it doesn’t need a rifled barrel. This means you can probably get a few accurate shots off a single plastic barrel.

I also think that it would be awesome to adapt that using standard metal plumbing pipe. The housing, trigger assembly etc. can all be printed and you could just use a piece of copper or metal pipe as the barrel for something a little more permanent.

I think a double-barrel plastic .410 would be an amazing self defense weapon. I would love to make this and would be willing to even front the money to have it designed ( as I have no design skills ) so if you are interested in designing a double barrel .410 pistol let me know!

  6. So after downloading, it seems the frame.stl file is a little weird. It is only 918kb, and when brought into Slic3r, nothing shows up. All the other files seem to work.

  7. As I live in the European Soviet Union, I’m just debating theoretically a notion, so the Commissars won’t come knocking my door again, in search for a “Machinegun Factory”.

    Having said so, CONGRATULATIONS!

By the way, a piece of 9mm Hydraulic tube, for a Barrel, and using a sliced version of the 3D printed Plastic as a Mold, for a forced-air Charcoal aluminum Foundry, would result on a much safer gun.
    Just sayin’…

And no, I did not forget there are LAWS against doing so, without that AOW permit; There’s always the alternative of making one gun, not for sale, using a gun barrel, freely available in the USA, to my knowledge.

  8. Downloaded the files successfully, but having trouble opening the files:

“This file is invalid for use as the following: Certificate Trust List.”

Any assistance would be greatly obliged. Thanks

  9. Much amused by “ovular hole” typo in README.txt, I think you meant “oval” Ovular as in ovulation?

Have you considered using fiberglass/epoxy patches for strength?

That might be ‘cheating’ but if you use standard sizes/kits (eg, car-body kits) it would require very little skill.

I watched Cody’s video, its well made as are your philosophical points.

  10. I can view my files just fine in netfabb Studio, but when I try to slice them in any version of slic3r that I have, all I get out is a little 5-layer oval shape for any of the pieces in the bundle. Is this happening to anybody else? Does anybody know of a slicing tool that works with these files? Thanks.

  11. You created this for making the point of second amendment in the united states. But have you thgought about the scale of colateral damage it creates in parts of the world?

  12. It’s amazing how Liberals weep at Hypothetical Gun Crimes, but ignore “Fast and Furious”, Obama’s Killer Drones and most of all, Margaret Nazi Senger’s “Planned Parenthood’s” Dr. Mengele Kermit…
    How convenient.

  13. shao711

Have you thought about the harm from State-gun-control laws to freedom fighters who consequently have difficulty obtaining arms for liberation?

From a ghetto in poland, 1943

  14. Dear Cody,

Your value (besides being an excellent lib gadfly with a law degree and texas attitude) is the physical testing you’ve done; anyone can digitize or create a file and fab it. (Again, we applaud your cajones/tude/competence/clarity) And that is a great value indeed —performing engineering optimization on real artifacts made with real machines and real materials. And then the awesome open-source sharing. (And free PR, lol)

Free as in speech. Free as in the second amendment. And all the others.

    ….

Hey medieval Pope-tyrant, check this thing out that Gutenberg invented…

  15. Would it be better to print this is nylon or polycarbonate? I know ABS is the easiest to print it out of but maybe there is a stronger material.

  16. There are additive printers which sinter metal powders. GE is going to use them for jet nozzles.

Its pretty cool that DC fabbed a barrel that was usable. Although it “necessitated” a ferrous implant for victims of the US regime. One can imagine freer subjects.

Also, why no ribs, just thicker parts? A mech E would probably augment with ribs.

Also, is there no milling-machine CNC file for a pistol? A planar design seems quite possible.

Though the hardware store ad-hocs are pretty good too, and most don’t have a milling or routing machine.

  17. as far as the rifling, why not just get a spring, then flatten or grind it, make the barrel have grooves for the spring, so it twists in from the back. problem solved, you have added more metal made the barrel stronger, it now has rifling and its not illegal!

  18. I’ll never could understand USA people. Every day kids are killed and you only think to make and give him weapons. Really both of you are very crazy.. When your little son or daughter makes a shot him/herself what will you do?. You will be guilty. You will ( you are a killer)
My husband tell me why we not go to USA on hollydays. and i answer her that never in my life i will go to this crazy country, where you are a criminal before all, a country that makes a question in the airplane: “Are you coming to kill our president?”.
Men definitively All of you are very crazy. Go to a Psichiatric.
All your crazy country for you.

  19. Honestly Fuck the Government and their power happy Hitler controlling Ideology.Any Human has a God given right to defend themselves. family. and peers. Period No Human has the right to tell another they can’t. Nor do you liberal government idiots have the right to tell people they have to have a piece of paper with your permission. Your not God Go Fuck yourselves. So you Liberal idiots on here. Bad people will always have access to weapons whether it be bought or made. So go get in your Odumbass butt fest and leave Freedom alone.

  20. I’ve been following this project waiting for this day. I’ve ordered my 3D printer only after downloading the Liberator, first, to sale (to become legend and hood rich) then to give away as many as I can print to all my niggas. Thank you Gods! !! Expect our donations in the near future. Don’t ever stop what you’re doing. Call me an evangelist. #REALTALK (Listen on SoundCloud(dotcom)(slash)KiTeMoDe)

  21. hey “gatsby26″ thanks for the reply. do you know if it can print the liberator with out a problem? or do you think the makerbot is better? i just wanna know what is full proof. thanks

  22. Just a thought:
Why not configure one for a caliber conversion sleeve, like those that already exist for flare guns and shotguns? (See: http://www.mcace.com/adapters.htm for a couple examples. Plenty of others are available from other vendors)

    Metal problem: Solved.
    Barrel problem: Solved.

Frankly, I think it is great that it is all plastic, but for those that are concerned, a sleeve solves many of your concerns.

….dang…now I have to learn to use CAD and alter….and share!

  23. Seems like you don’t realise what you are doing here. You’re just giving the possibility to anyone to kill someone else. You must be in jail for that.
You american people are CRAZY with guns !
Don’t you understand that guns are the worst solution for a country national security !

YOU ARE FUCKING DANGEROUS MAN !

    DANGER PUBLIC !

  24. Hey “Alter”, I have been doing TONS of research for the last month and 3dfactorys Mendelmax seems to be the only printer thats a sure thing. His is the only one that has a build volume of 9″x11″x6″. Makerbots cheap printers can only print 5″x5″x5″. Even Makerbots new really expensive printer can only print 6″x9″x5. There are other Mendelmaxs on ebay and online but so far the only one ive seen with that much build volume is the one i linked from 3dfactory. Plus i have heard they have really good customer service.

  25. magnet:?xt=urn:btih:6C4089AC6C134F1B2DFF18499658B228D9EB2657&dn=Liberator.zip&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3a80%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.publicbt.com%3a80%2fannounce&ws=Liberator%20Pistol%20Design%20by%20defcad.com&ws=http%3a%2f%2fdefcad.org%2fliberator%2f&ws=STL&ws=3d%20manfacturing

This should be a ‘torrent magnet’ for liberator.zip a 2MB file with STL files I’ve opened successfully.

  26. I downloaded the files but the frame is giving me trouble. whats the right size the the frame
should be. im using a replicator printer and using makerware to print.

  27. So… this looks like it’s just a single-shot pistol right now, correct? (Not a semi-auto?)

Assuming that is correct, can this design be modded to make it a semi-auto?

  28. the production of ANY conventional weapon is ALREADY legal and does not require an FFL or an AOW. As long as it’s for you and you build it, it is a legal weapon. And it CAN be sold, as long as it has a serial number and you ONLY sell it to a FFL holder, you are within your rights as a citizen. The BATFE, “recommends” that you affix a serial number, however, at least engrave your name and home town, to avoid any problems. ALL of this is available at BATFE’s website under the FAQ tab.

  29. You’re fucking getting more and more crazy, you Americans ! In Europe we already knew very well since many decades your childish passion for guns and pistols, and your stupid attachment to the historical second amendment of the US Constitution, but now you’re really getting mad. Concerning the second amendment : Can’t you understand for God’s sake that, far to protect yourself, this amendment leads to a massive proliferation of arms everywhere in the country, making your daily life and the life of the society much more dangerous ?

  30. Congrats on producing this weapon, and making the whole “Gun Control” topic completely pointless. Cody Wilson, great job on this! I hope to see many variants of this/new versions.

    Sincerely,

    The Future

  31. Since when does the non-law, bureaucratic opinion of the BATFEces count? By the way, BATFE says elsewhere that making a firearm for one’s own personal use does not fall under their “interstate commerce” authority. Not only is it ‘not interstate’, it’s not even commerce!! And this terrorist organization which violates the law with impunity, which has kidnapped, murdered, and unlawfully detained innocent Americans, fabricated evidence, smuggled guns over borders, facilitated the narcotics trade, and obstructed justice… dares to tell us what we’re ‘allowed’ to do? SCREW THEM! and the horse (whore?) they rode in on!

  32. The .frame.stl file doesn’t load in Catalyst EX. It seems to break the program. The rest are fine. Also, is there any orientation that yields better results or do we just orient it to product the least support?

  33. I have a 1st generation Cupcake. Think this print will come out on my printer? Anyone else here with a Cupcake or TOM who has successfully printed this design?

  34. you obviously miss the point as to what they are doing they are not giving guns away to terrorists the are putting the power back in to the collectives hands you so called terrorists will use any means to kill or complete their agenda, the gun is nothing more then a stepping stone to complete control being taken away from the government that aims to brain wash and control the entire population of not just this country and not only that but what is a terrorist going to do with a plastic single shot 25 cal honestly use your brain before you type

  35. Con, I find your statement confusing, first you act as if he referred to DD as terrorists, then switch to the BATFE? I believe he was referring to the BATFE. This whole project started with 2 goals- to provide a weapon to people regardless of laws, and to invalidate the laws endangering them in the first place.

  36. Can’t download anything. I get either a “removed” message, or an unending scan. Could someone please put a set of prints on PDF? Don’t have access to a 3D printer anyway. Thanks

  37. I always thought American’s were not the smartest of races, but now I think you have removed all doubt. In a nation where people take great pleasure in randomly killing children whilst in school or innocent theatre goers on a regular basis, I find it truly amazing that you would publish the blueprints to a gun which can be made with printer readily available on ebay.

The nerve of you people to act distraught when there is a mass killing is quite unbelievable when you are supplying these same people with the tools to commit these atrocities.

You truly are a race of moron’s. I hope you will take pleasure in having the blood of the people who will almost certainly be killed by one of these contraptions on your hands.

    Unbelievable.

  38. I get a message :”UPDATE:

This file has been removed from public access at the request of the US Department of Defense Trade Controls. Until further notice, the United States government claims control of the information.

  39. @browncow5

I am not sure of which country you come from, but in the united states, making this gun and selling it on eBay is not going to happen for a few reasons. First eBay does not allow the sale of guns, secondly you would need an FFL to produce the weapons and then legally sell them, or even transfer them, thirdly if you actually sold this gun to people you are dumb, this is a proof of concept, as I am sure Cody Wilson will back up, if the gun were to explode and injure or kill someone you, the seller would be to blame. If you have read anything about his test he shows that the first gun exploded after shooting a 5 seven round, which is a pistol/ sub machine gun round, not a rifle round.

Now as far as “releasing the blueprints to the internet” CAD files have been available for all sorts of machine guns and pistols for years now, in general they were used by people that have CNC mills and lathes, or even just drill presses. What makes you think that a 3d printed plastic single shot pistol is going to be such a problem. The accuracy of this weapon, being that it has no rifling is going to be very very low, not to mention that it shooting a .380 caliber bullet from a plastic barrel would have such low velocity that a commonly available CO2 powered BB gun would be more effective.

Operating a 3d printer is not as simple as click and print. that would be like saying that anyone can operate a CNC mill or lathe easily, and without any experience, I would be surprised if you yourself would even know how to operate a 3d printer.

I can almost guarantee that anyone who has or is going to print this gun already has a firearm. this 3d printed gun is of no consequence as their are far easier ways to obtain, or make a legitimate fire arm from more commonly available materials using common tools.

Clearly you have your head up your ass, you think that we accept these mass killings, perhaps you should take a visit to Git’mo and see what happens to the people that commit these heinous crimes. Your conceptions of our nation is misguided, do not come to our country, we do not want people like you, and we do not appreciate your opinion.

  40. I thought this was America where we had the right to bear arms and the freedom of speech and assembly, not some fascist government where they censor everything on the internet

  41. Guess not, I just want to ask Liberal Socialists Control Freaks this:
What about the Black Market Guns, are they not the REAL problem, not some experiments done just for Proof of Concept?

  42. Yeah you know that Mega isn’t going to remove jack-squat. The Government has already attempted to shut down DotCom but he is having the last laugh it seems.

Good luck getting that URL removed.

  43. What should the scaling be? 2000% as recommended above produces a barrel diameter of 7.45mm, but if the intent is to shoot a 380 ACP, then it should be ~9mm. Anyone??

  44. Obviously, I can do the math and come up with a scaling factor of 2416% for a 9.00mm barrel ID. Perhaps the dimensions in the Readme file for the void space for the metal insert will provide the scaling…?

  45. Brilliant!! 2540%…..the relationship of inches to millimeters, produces a barrel ID of 9.45mm and meets the reference measurements in the Readme file. Sorry if this is letting a cat out of the bag for plausible deniability, but admin, you’re welcome to delete.

  46. This may be the most important government issue you deal with in your lifetime. This is not about a plastic gun, it’s about government control. If you don’t believe that, then look at the statement, “This file has been removed from public access at the request of the US Department of Defense Trade Controls. Until further notice, the United States government claims control of the information.”.

This is too important to ignore, if the government can suppress this information then all information is fair game. I am disappointed that Defcad didn’t stand up to the government and tell them to bite his shiny metal ass, but the feds come across as scary folks who can put you away for life (or kill you) if you don’t play ball.

Defcad, grow a pair and put up a paypal link to donate to your legal fund and I’ll throw in a couple of hundred dollars. We can give you a multimillion dollar legal fund if you let us. The next war has begun, and it started here.

  47. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK0BuY50Q0A&feature=youtu.be

    Dear Cody,

So you did it, you made the world’s first printable gun.
Doing so, not only did you get crowned as star trek fans’ newest idol,
you also became gun enthusiasts’ new protégée.

In the name of liberty you went through with your deadly plans.
Claiming to fight for freedom, holding up high libertarian ideologies
you seem to deliberately ignore the impact of such design on the wider world.
I am not a US citizen so I won’t go into the 2nd amendment debate
Instead I will pretend your ‘gun statement’ is about liberties as you declare it.
Many people regard your plastic printed weapon as a ‘gadget’
Did you know that during the Manhattan project
the code name for the Atomic bomb was; “the gadget”?
I don’t mean to flatter your ego by comparing the ‘liberator’ to the A-bomb,
but I am curious as to how far do you envision the impact such file can have when widely spread.
You call it the ‘liberator’, referencing to the WWII rifle
which was created to be widely distributed in occupied Europe.
Meant to be dropped from planes onto concentration camps
in order for prisoners to pick them up and use them for insurrection.
I feel the reference is a bit overdone,
comparing on-going gun control regulations with WWII occupation
is in my opinion showing the hollowness of your motivation.

You will argue that your gun file will not worsen the already existing gun traffics
which brings me back to the WWII liberator,
As resistance movement could get hold of much more efficient weapons
the quality of the gun was not the argument,
But the US troops were hoping that the idea
that every citizen could be armed would threaten occupying troops

And don’t get me wrong, I know that if it had not been you, it would have been someone else
But you use open sources movement as a protection shield,
And looking into this as a student and designer,
I think it is the right moment to evaluate open structure philosophy

Aren’t you concerned that your freedom ideology will turn into global terror?
The open files Utopia turn into major Dystopia?

    Looking forward to your answer,
    sincerely yours,

  48. Unfortunately, while there are a few modifications that will skirt the AOW category, and although creating weapons at home is not considered legally to be “manufacturing,” especially when for your own use: there are plenty other legal issues to prevent or restrict the dissemination of and and usage of this device.
The biggest is what is currently rampaging across this site, the USML (United States Munitions List, check Wikipedia, it is well beyond comprehensive) which prevents any sort of dissemination of a design or plan which aid in the designing of or creation of anything even remotely military related by foreign citizens (and by extension foreign governments).
USML will not allow us to say, publish your fancy new nuclear reactor, your spy satellite (at least up till recently, like last month), your projected energy weapon, close assault weapon, shotgun, or bloody AIRCRAFT (or associated equipment).
AND HO HEY if you try to patent anything, you may still be subject to an Invention Secrecy Act patent-block.

I identify with the overreaching of the government from a different angle, my ancestors were not a part of any such glorious political acts: just the opposite. Over the past 200 years, my family, from mostly both sides, have been persecuted ethnically, politically, a different portion of my family’s ethnicity again, and then persecuted again for politics and religion. Quite a serious of events, suffice to say, despite have quite a firm grasp on our family’s history, we do not have anything to speak for of an “extended family.” Family reunions are really, really small.
Somehow my parents families made it to the US, struggled with what pocket money they managed to hide, and became successful through overpowering hard work, sweat, and sleep deprivation… legit workaholics the lot of ‘em.
So from the angle of the continually persecuted (and don’t we feel paranoid :D ), we get a bit jumpy whenever the US, despite the great justice system and the work of the founding fathers, manages to cook up another disturbingly heavy handed law.

I live in CA, home of the most Maker friendly gun laws in the world.
I say this as someone who spent north of 40 hours gathering and reading municipal, state, and federal law, rulings, and agency policies on the making or modification of guns intended solely for personal use. In CA, you can make for yourself nearly any gun, or modify nearly any gun, you want as long as you have no intent to allow anyone else access to it, or if you have the federal licenses (not full blown manufacture’s FFLs like what Defense Distributed had to get) to do it.
A good example is the .50 BMG restriction in CA, it’s quite famous actually. However, the restriction only applies to rifles chambered in .50 BMG… not to pistols or even an actual honest to goodness semi-auto 50cal M2 Browning (which has believe it or not seen heavy use as a sniper rifle, setting several long standing, until recently, records).
You can also buy a .50 BMG rifle out of state and have it chambered out of state to the slightly more expensive, but functionally nearly identical .50 EDM. (This is a good time to point out that apparently no violent crime has been perpetrated by a .50 BMG rifle.)

  49. Terrorist already know how to do this now
Problem is jay plastic guns can make it through metal detectors. Great be prepared for more searches entering airports now I personally want one

  50. For those of you looking for the download link. Here is the file hosted on another website.

I’ll take my chances, the worst thing that could happen is they ask me to take it down. There is nothing wrong with sharing some 1′s and 0′s that are arranged in a very specific way. In fact, this is very analogous to a gunsmith teaching an apprentice – just with 21st century tech.

Here is the download link. http://www.modelyst.com/model/159 – Click Entire model (.ZIP file)

  51. Here’s what someone needs to do. I’ll try to do it later but in the meantime. The file needs to be UUencoded and pushed to a PDF document and hang it on amazon kindle or B&N nook. It would then become a published work and a free speech issue but could be cut and pasted into a decoder and made whole again. This was the case against PGP back in the 90s and the Justice Department chose to not go to the Supreme Court with the Challenge because it could set precedence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy#Criminal_investigation

  52. I don’t see why DDTC is involved. That’s a bad call on their part — this isn’t an imported technology. (I suppose it could be “exported,” but it’s not an actual gun.) 53. For all those complaining- whether about airports or “unregistered weapons” – THINK. What has been done prior to this project? People made simple firearms out of sheet metal and pipes. much simpler than this, and cheaper. 2 appropriately sized pipes and a small round object can make a shotgun or crude pistol. airports? Ammunition typically contains copper, tin, brass, steel, and well known propellants that airport detectors will find without trouble.
Unborn, while your poem is well worded, you are misinformed, and seem to be unaware of the point of this project. The liberator was not a rifle, it was a pistol made from sheet metal, and the airdrop concept is twisted as well, even among firearm enthusiasts. It was initially made to be supplied to those under Japanese rule, it was mass produced, then scrapped. over a million were made, then melted down and the steel reused for more effective items. This will not increase human crimes with guns, this is an expensive, hazardous proof-of-concept when much more easily attainable weapons are available. It is not the invisible weapon that so many claim, it has no traits valuable to a criminal. It is bulky, inaccurate, fragile, weak, costs more, and takes longer to make than assembling a zip gun. This is not an economic commodity for arms traffickers, as there are methods for making far more desirable weapons at a lower cost for criminals.
The primary point is to show the immorality of civilian subjugation, the futility of gun control, and that those who want a weapon will get one.
People need to stop acting like toddlers. Stop crying, clear your eyes of your tears of woe and terror, turn on the lights, look at this, and apply some adult thought.
