Queen Elizabeth II awards President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono its knighthood

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will honour President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who will be visiting Britain for three days for the prestigious award of Honorary Knights Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath.

The award is one of the highest ranks of the oldest order of British chivalry. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is 59, is a retired general and president of Indonesia. In July 2009 he became the first Indonesian president ever to be re-elected. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono won his first victory after 38 years of military rule under General Suharto, who was forced to resign after the financial breakdown of the whole of South East Asia, causing the collapse of the Indonesian currency. His popularity ensured a second term of office.

Although no ceremony or display will be held, Yudhoyono joins leaders such as US President Ronald Regan, former French President Jacques Chirac and Turkish President Abdullah Gül and Indonesia’s foreign affairs spokesman Teuku Faizasyah in collecting such a prestigious award.

The Knights Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath is the British order of chivalry that has been passed down since 1725 for internationally recognised diplomatic service.

The order was presented to the president after lunch with the Queen on wednesday and marked 33 years since the visits of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip from Indonesia.

Leaving on Tuesday with his first Lady Ani Yudhoyono, they will arrive for a busy schedule in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. They will be staying in Buckingham Palace and  Yudhoyono will be meeting with the prime minister, David Cameron, Prince Charles and other dignitaries and political figureheads. Below is a video of the dinner.

Yudhoyono will then lead the second meeting in London for the High Level Panel of the UN’s 67th General Assembly session. He will announce its Post-Millennium Development Goals, following the first event which was held in New York last month.
