1.        The archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar (A & N) Islands is located at the confluence of vital sea lines of communication, making the region one of great geo-strategic relevance, translating into challenges and opportunities for India. The importance of A&N Islands in the security matrix of the country thus assumes importance. It is therefore prudent to have a strong and deterrent military capability at these islands. This, however, cannot be accomplished without other concurrent development measures in these islands.

2.        The unified nature of the military setup in the islands has existed since the early 1970s. In the aftermath of the Kargil operations, the importance of unified operations under a central command was felt necessary to handle present day conflicts, more so in the A&N region. As a result of the Kargil Review Committee and on recommendations of Group of Ministers, the Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) was commissioned on 08 Oct 2001 as the first unified Command, comprising the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Vice Admiral Arun Prakash was the first Commander – in – Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN).

3.        Since its inception, the Unified Command described as the Sentinel Post for the East and South has effectively performed its charter of duties encompassing safeguarding the Islands, as well as the nation's maritime boundaries and air space, search and rescue at sea as well as anti-poaching operations. In addition, the Command has been actively involved in assisting civil authorities for welfare and improvement of the Islands wherever required. Certainly, ANC has risen from being an experiment to an inspiration; a true representation of seamless jointness between the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. The vision statement of ANC 'To set a shining example of jointmanship by excelling in all activities' aptly takes cognizance of its role in the region.

4.        The Command is presently headed by Air Marshal PK Roy, AVSM, VM, VSM. The Air Marshal took over as the 11th Commander – in – Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN) on 02 Nov 12.
