05-19-2011 08:43 BJT

Amateur video has emerged from Syria appearing to show hundreds of anti-government protesters marching through the streets of the northern city of Qamishli. The protests were organized by the General Council of the Kurdish Youth Groups and involved Kurdish, Arab and Christian demonstrators.

Meanwhile in the central city of Homs, amateur video showed demonstrators chanting and marching past rows of closed shops and businesses. The latest protests come amid reports of Syrian government forces unleashing tank shells on opponents on Wednesday.

Witnesses said the army shelled the western border town of Talkalakh with tanks for the fourth consecutive day. Activists say at least 27 people have been killed there since last week.
