Very nice specimen with good color and excellent luster. The specimen was once probably a more 3-dimensional piece but after geological time spent being compressed and swirled into the placers, it now clearly shows the remnants of at least one .6 cm compressed octohedron, if not two intergrown.

This is a large, squashed octohedron, elongated on the c-axis. As a specimen, it is a solid and attractive Gold with very fine luster and clearly. It presents a rounded, large hoppered crystal showing skeletal "ribs" following the side octohedral angles.

Fantastic world-class gold thumbnail specimen consisting of numerous hoppered cubes (largest is .9 cm!)and very well-defined skeletal ribs. You simply will not find many Gold thumbs the equal of this from anywhere. A killer for Nevada, in particular! This is a thick, hefty piece with a LOT of impact. It is somewhat brighter in person. I consider this a major gold thumbnail and a significant Nevada gold. I bought this entire lot to get this one piece, to be blunt, It is THAT extraordinary. This was one of the two outstanding specimens in the lot, which the collector had obtained by prospecting almost every year for the last 30 years!

Very bright and lustrous skeletal Gold crystal that had maintained some of its crystal form , and traces of what were once cubic crystals. A very dramatic thumb.

Amazing cluster of at least ten hoppered Gold octohedra. Some of the cubes are well-rounded while others maintain a pseudo-cubic or octohedral form. Many of the crystals have very sharp ribs on the insides of the hoppers. Overall, this is just a terrific specimen!

A large specimen with rich sparkly pyrite, and perhaps some gold in it - frankly I am not sure I can tell the difference, its probably minute here, but the museum seems to have been sure of it and so I pass on without testng how much is brassy pyrite and how much is real gold (probably minimal)

A remarkable locality piece consisting of a single complex crystal, embedded in quartz. The crystal is 8mm tall, and quite robust. It is sharpest on one face, compared to the others, but it IS clearly a squashed octohedral crystal and not a mass or nugget style. We are still researching this locality. Dr. Jaroslav Hyrsl provides the following information:I never heard about, it must be a misspelling. I found two localities of

This gold specimen is absolutely exquisite. I do not use the hyperbole lightly. It has natural pocket crystals, not etched out of surrounding matrix with acid, and so preternaturally bright and with a complex patina (as some such crystals can be, this is at its best). It is a large miniature which for many years was the best piece in the collection of my own mentor, Carlton Davis of Columbus , Ohio. He had bought it from Hugh Ford's famous NYC mineral shop in the 1950s for what at the time must have seemed a rather high price justified by its striking quality. (When Carl sold his collection, this piece went first to Bill Pinch and then to Mark Feinglos). The mine name of origin has been lost but it is from the motherlode area of old mining in California, mostly contained within the current Tuolumne County. The crystals are stunningly bright and sharp, and the specimen is displayable from both sides. It is intricately 3-dimensional in a manner that photos can only begin to convey. Illustrated in a large photo in the GOLD special book/issue of Lapis a few years ago, this is one of the more memorable gold miniatures in my experience and it simply leaves you stunned, to see in person, is all i can say. This specimen was painted in the 1970s by one of Carl's friends, a leading mineral artist of the time, and the painting comes with the piece. ex. Dr. Mark Feinglos Collection and Carlton Davis Collection (my own mentor when i was a kid). Former COVER PIECE, ROcks and Minerals magazine, Jan-Feb 1978.

A very rare locality piece with identifying and unusual matrix, showing rich seams of gold that seem to run throughout. Valid Georgia golds, and they must have enough matrix like this to be sure of it, are uncommon. This is likely a VERY old specimen, though no telling how old. It comes from the Richard Hauck gold collection, on display until recently in the Sterling Hill Mining Museum. Important, oldtime, US classic. 266 grams in weight, though obviously most of it is not gold.

Sure enough, there IS gold in here in dispersed flecks and one larger mass, floating inside a doubly-terminated quartz crystal! Unbelieveable! I cannot recall seeing anything like this. Its not a ton of gold, to be sure, but it IS obvious in person. From one of the numerous old claims in Butte County, Caifornia.

An exquisite plate composed of intergrown, dense gold crystals. This is a rich and attractive miniature for this important, historic old locality and such specimens are hard to come by at a reasonable price (which I feel this one is at). Although there are no old labels, a friend of mine has taken the piece to copare to those in museums in Vienna and in Prague, to be certain of its legitimacy.
