Bill Gates on Steve Jobs: We grew up together

We've seen plenty of Bill Gates on television, but we'd never seen him get emotional before. It was a striking, yet subtle moment in Gates' 60 Minutes interview this week when Charlie Rose asked him about his longtime business rival, the late Steve Jobs. Gates grew emotional as he recalled visiting Jobs just before his death. The billionaire welled up as he described their last conversation, which he described as "forward-looking."

"He showed me the boat he was working on," said Gates, "and talked about how he's looking forward to being on it, even though we both knew there was a good chance that wouldn't happen."

How Bill Gates' school launched his life's work

"He and I, in a sense, grew up together," explained Gates. "We were within a year of the same age, and we were kind of naively optimistic and built big companies. And every fantasy we had about creating products and learning new things-- we achieved all of it. And most of it as rivals. But we always retained a certain respect and communication, including even when he was sick."

(and has found a few working medicines and made them cheap and affordable) He brings free vaccines and energy solutions to the third world and gives them away for free. He makes filters for clean drinking water and gives it all away free.... if hes a jerk id hate to know what you think nice guys are

I think that these men changed the world forever on how we interact with each other and how we get our news and how we see the world. Not since Thomas Edison and Henry Ford has the world changed so much for the betterment of mankind as a whole. Think how we many advancements in life giving machines and treatments there have been, exploration, science and architecture to name a just a few... all with the aid of computers and there counterpart software. I am not saying all change is good, people with twisted minds will subvert any and all inventions to there own evils and ends.

Every day, my business suffer--and I suffer--because of the hideously poor quality, compatibility, and stability of some of Microsoft's oldest software. Jobs knew, first and foremost, that his stuff had to actually work. Second, it had to be easy and intuitive. Third, it had to be elegant. These are design concepts that made Apple into Apple, and elude Microsoft to this day.

Apple's entire business model for two full decades was to make subpar products at a higher price. The early Apple computers were light years behind Commodores. The Mac was light years behind the Amiga. The PC still dominates the mac because macs are toys that just aren't stable enough for everyday use.

Face it, Windows will always have more developer support than OSX, and if this was a perfect world, we'd use Linux more often for development and Windows for deployment

i use both ... and the mac is far more reliable and stable than the pc.

These two are/were self-important marketers. Look at their histories and hypocrisies. The list is extensive, going back to even the 1970s when Jobs leeched off the college he dropped out of, or when Gates railed on pirates and competitors (before he turned to predatory antics that destroyed competition, and giving source code to the countries that pirate the most (but before asking the US government to fix the mess he made because piracy and hacking are now WORSE...)

it's worse because the proliferation and access to computing technology is much greater now than in the past ... and there are many more assets to go after as a result of that increased use of technology in nearly everything.

it's interesting that people want to discount gates, jobs, etc's contribution to 'innovation' ... then blame them for anything that comes from the industry that they clearly had a huge hand in creating.

you can't have it both ways ... there's good and bad in everything ... usually thru how that thing is used ... not sourced from what potential it provides.

I did start watching this. Call it curiousity. I did STOP watching it when the lady analyst started analyzing whether Bill Gates was tearing up at one point. "It's subtle."
I mean really. What is the point of this? Do you by any chance want to send a reporter out to my house when I get upset over something? No? I didn't think so. But why are Bill Gates' tears that much more newsworthy, or forget comparing his tears to mine. Why are they newsworhty period?
I must be stone-hearted.
