November 05, 2001, MondayWomen's Health
To the Editor: Simply eliminating the global gag rule on international family planning financing will not repair the damage inflicted on women's reproductive health and rights abroad (front page, Oct. 25).
October 29, 2000, SundayNot Just Abortion
To the Editor: A May 14 letter writer says the term ''reproductive rights'' as used by the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy means the right to choose abortion. Our view of reproductive rights is more comprehensive. These rights include the right to decide on the number, spacing and timing of one's children and to have the information, education and means to do so. These rights entail services related to family planning, maternal health, treatment of H.I.V.-AIDS and sexually trans...
May 17, 2000, WednesdayFamily Planning Choices Are Still Too Few
To the Editor: Mary Ann Glendon and Mary Haynes (Op-Ed, Oct. 20) assert that only ''bribes, bullying, threats or outright coercion'' can overcome women's desire for large families.
October 25, 1999, MondayDefending the Defenders of Abortion Rights
JANET L. BENSHOOF, the lawyer who heads the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy, did not know Dr. Barnett A. Slepian, the Buffalo obstetrician who was murdered, apparently because he performed abortions. But years ago, she represented his clinic. ''We've represented most of the abortion providers,'' Ms. Benshoof says, in her organization's Wall Street offices. ''At one time or another nearly all our clients have been under death threats.''
November 04, 1998, WednesdayContraceptive Care
To the Editor: That House Republicans are willing to go behind the scenes to strip from Government financing legislation a provision that would provide to female Federal employees coverage for prescription contraceptives is an eye-opener (news article, Oct. 8). The legislation was passed by both houses of Congress; this latest gambit is part of an agenda of anti-abortion advocates who wrongly argue that the pregnancy prevention brought about by contraceptives is equivalent to abortion.
October 11, 1998, SundayFamily Planning Aid
To the Editor: It is tragic that many of the world's poorest women face unnecessary complications, sterility and even death when forced to obtain illegal abortions (news article, June 3). The United States would worsen this tragedy by blacklisting any organization that so much as publicly speaks about the dangers of illegal abortions. Congress has passed a bill that would ban United States family planning financing to organizations that use their own funds to address the issue of abortion i...
June 08, 1998, MondayWeighing Abortion In a High-Tech Era
To the Editor: I take issue with your thesis that ''modern medicine has irrevocably altered the moral landscape surrounding abortion'' (Week in Review, Jan. 11). In 1973, when Roe v. Wade was decided, fetal viability was placed between 24 and 28 weeks. Medical science has made great strides since, but viability is still placed at approximately 24 weeks. You say ''no technology has had as much impact on the abortion debate as ultrasound.'' It has helped doctors to detect fetal abnormalit...
January 16, 1998, FridaySlower Population Growth Won't Last Forever; U.S. Undermines Itself
To the Editor: ''House Threat to Family Planning'' (editorial, Nov. 6) rightly criticizes proposed restrictions on international family planning money as harmful to women's health. But the legislation also contradicts United States foreign policy goals as well as international human rights treaties endorsed by the United States and more than 100 other countries.
November 09, 1997, SundayAbortion and Speech
To the Editor: Representative Chris Smith's bill to deny United States aid to any foreign group that provides, with its own money, abortions and abortion counseling or that lobbies for changes in abortion law shackles more than family planning services; it also shackles the democratic process (''Shackling Family Planning Abroad,'' editorial, Sept. 4).
