  • Teen Vogue’s Amy Astley: Summer Fashion, Celeb Role Models and Best Advice for Teens

    As the editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue since the magazine’s inception 10 years ago, Amy Astley has a guiding mantra when it comes to interacting with her readers.

    “It’s a big mistake to underestimate today’s teenagers, as I think adults often do,” she said. “The truth is that kids have access to all the information out there. You really have to up your game.”

    And that has been the challenge for Teen Vogue, which was launched in the era before Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Now every teenager has quick access to all the latest looks and celebrity fashion via social media and a smartphone.

    “We try to be leaders instead of followers,” said Astley. “We have our own point of view on fashion, which comes from the people we work with, who are artists. We put our own spin on fashion for our teen reader and inspire her, lead her with something different from everyday life.”

  • Barbecue Expert Daniel Vaughn and the Secrets of Smoked Meat

    As someone who has visited about 600 barbecue joints -- 500 in Texas alone -- Daniel Vaughn considers the majority of barbecue offered these days to be bad.

    “Once you’ve reached the mountaintop, once you’ve eaten the best stuff, you’re ruined really,” Vaughn said. “It’s hard to go back to the mediocre stuff. And most of it is mediocre.”

    Spoken like a true snob. That’s not only his Twitter handle (@BBQsnob) but also the self-chosen moniker for a man who has lived and breathed barbecue and “been an incredible glutton” over the last several years. It started with a dedicated blog, “Full Custom Gospel BBQ,” written in his spare time. And his passion for barbecue led Texas Monthly to appoint Vaughn -- a trained architect -- as its first full-time Barbecue Editor, a position that many call a “dream job.”
