Ely-born actor Guy Pearce will grace cinema screens next week when Iron Man 3 is officially released in the UK.
The 45-year-old plays the geneticist Aldrich Killian in what is expected to be one of the biggest movie openings of the year.
The Hollywood star features alongside Robert Downey Jr., Rebecca Hall, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Kingsley.
Pearce is best-known for his roles in Memento, The King’s Speech and Prometheus.
The son of an air force test pilot and home economics teacher, Pearce and his family moved to Australia when he was aged three.
His career began on the small screen – he was cast in the popular Australian soap opera Neighbours in 1985, and played the role of Mike Young for several years.
He later secured parts in Home and Away and Snowy River: The McGregor Saga.
In 1990 at the age of 20, Pearce appeared in his first film Heaven Tonight.
But his first major breakthrough came four years later, when he landed the part of an outrageous drag queen in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
He enjoyed international stardom after featuring in the Oscar-nominated L.A. Confidential, co-starring with Kevin Spacey and Russell Crowe as Los Angeles policemen.
He then featured in Rules of Engagement alongside Samuel L. Jackson, before joining the cast of neo-noir psychological thriller Memento. But after shooting the movies in quick succession the actor needed time out.
After retiring to a remote spot north of Broome for a month of self-reflection and Tibetan Buddhism reading, Pearce appeared in hits including The Road, Lawless and the back-to-back best picture Oscar winners The Hurt Locker and The King’s Speech.
The Factory Girl star then returned to television screens. He starred opposite Kate Winslet in Mildred Pierce in 2011, a role which earned him an Emmy, and then in Jack Irish telemovies in 2012.
That year Pearce also played the multibillionaire founder and CEO of Weyland Corp. in Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott.
Pearce, who lives in Melbourne, has twice been voted among E’s Sexiest Men in Entertainment. He has been married to childhood sweetheart Kate Mestitz, a psychologist, since March 1997.
