Facts about visually impaired in Nepal

According to the estimation there are about 200000 visually impaired people in Nepal, about 40000 of them are age of school going. However, only 4000 of children (10%) receive education in special or integrated schools. Every year an average of 70 to 80 students pass the school leaving exam (S.L.C) -after grade 10. For these students it is a challenge to continue their college education as they have to come to kathmandu and have limited choice of accessible literature and study material.

iec Nepal’s role in tackling the issue

iec works with all relevant stake holders to make the visually impaired more confident, better educated and equipped with professional skills.
The key focus areas are:

  • interpersonal, English and IT related trainings for visually impaired and their teachers.
  • livelihood and awareness raising initiatives to successfully integrate the visually impaired in Nepalese society.
