Shenzhen to punish drivers failing to yield to ambulances

This law is following an accident in Beijing that, because few drivers yielded to the ambulance, an injured bicyclist died in the ambulance on a 3-kilometer distance to hospital due to congested road during the evening rush hour.

Shenzhen traffic police promoted seventeen convenience-for-people measures for people living in Shenzhen on December 1st, including “green channel”, to avoid the tragedy to happen again.
Zeng Quan, officer of the city’s traffic police bureau said, in addition to ambulance, police vehicles, fire engines and rescue vehicles, are not restricted by traffic lights or the direction of traffic in an emergency.

In order to save valuable time for patients, Shenzhen traffic police and the city’s 120 rescue centers will establish a joint system to guarantee the schedule of ambulances in an emergency situation.

Shenzhen traffic police invited resident to give suggestions on how to provide paths through traffic for ambulances. A netizen suggested that video cameras can be used to record road conditions during emergencies and therefore, a real-time traffic information could be better distributed through radio and online media websites.
