PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The Department of Pathology is composed of multiple pathology disciplines providing diagnostic service not just to Hospital Kuala Lumpur but also to the whole country as it is the National Referral Centre for pathology services of the Ministry of Health. This department is one of the largest clinical departments in Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) with more than 350 laboratory staff from various categories including 20 pathologists. The department has been accredited to ISO 15189:2003 Standards for medical testing laboratories particular requirements for quality and competence since 2003. As part of Kuala Lumpur Hospital, the department has also obtained ISO 9001:2008 certification and Malaysian Society of Quality in Health (MSQH) standards.


LOCATION

The main laboratory complex including the administrative and head of department’s office is located on the first floor of the main hospital block, opposite the Diagnostic and Imaging Department. Satellite laboratories are located in Outpatient Department (OPD), Maternity Hospital and Institute of Urology & Nephrology. Peadiatric Laboratory is situated in the Peadiatric Institute.

To provide accurate and timely diagnostic service to meet the needs and requirement of our customers for patient management.

MISSION STATEMENT

  • To ensure that all testing are carried out in accordance with procedures and using appropriate methodologies.
  • To ensure all laboratory personnel are competent and comply with the policies and procedures, guidelines, standards and rules.
  • To sustain and improve pathology services accordance to ISO 9001:2008, MSQH and ISO 15189:2007 standards.

Quality policy statement

  1. Department of Pathology, HKL is committed to providing analytical, interpretative and advisory services in the field of chemical pathology, microbiology, virology, haematology, histopathology and cytology of the highest quality and good laboratory practice.


  2. The objectives of the Quality management system are to meet the needs and requirements of its users by:


    • Ensure that all staff are familiar with all policies and procedures relevant to their work and implement the policies and procedures at all times.

    • Staff training and continuous professional development at all levels to provide a full and effective service to its users.

    • Proper procurement and maintenance of equipment and other resources as needed for the provision of the services.

    • The use of examination procedures that will ensure the highest achievable quality of all tests performed.

    • Reporting results of examinations in ways which are timely, accurate and clinically useful.


  3. The laboratory complies with the requirements of MS ISO 15189: 2007, ISO 9001:2008 and Pathology/Laboratory Service Standards 15, 3rd edition of Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH).

CLIENT CHARTER
  1. Every customer will be treated with care, consideration and dignity.
  2. Every customer will be given a clear and comprehensive explanation about the test request when necessary.
  3. Each specimen will be dealt according to the standard work process and procedure.
  4. Every test will be performed promptly, carefully and accurately using proven methodology and in line with the latest technology available.
  5. Urgent test request i.e STAT tests will be processed immediately.
  6. All medico-legal test results will be treated with strict confidentiality.
  7. The staff of the department will have a continuing programme and training which provide the knowledge and skills required for staff to maintain competency in their position.
