Joe Biden Reportedly Apologized To Obama Over Gay Marriage Comments

By JULIE PACE 05/10/12 09:06 PM ET AP

Joe Biden

WASHINGTON — Shortly before President Barack Obama voiced his support for gay marriage, Vice President Joe Biden apologized to the president for comments that led him to speed up his public pronouncement.

Biden and Obama spoke in the Oval Office on Wednesday, a person familiar with the exchange said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the private talk. Obama accepted his vice president's apology, saying he knew Biden was speaking from his heart when he declared in a television interview that he was "absolutely comfortable" with gay couples marrying.

Biden's comments pushed gay marriage to the forefront of the presidential race and focused a fresh spotlight on Obama's vague position on the matter. The president, who once opposed gay marriage, had been saying for more than a year that his personal views were "evolving."

The vice president spoke out on gay marriage without White House consent, leaving Obama aides deeply frustrated.

In an interview with ABC News, Obama said he wasn't angry at Biden, though he thought the vice president had gotten "a little bit over his skis" by voicing his support for gay marriage ahead of his boss.

"Would I have preferred to have done this in my own way, in my own terms, without I think, there being a lot of notice to everybody? Sure," Obama said. "But all's well that ends well."

By the time Biden's interview on NBC's "Meet The Press" aired on Sunday morning, a handful of close Obama aides knew that the president had already finished that evolution. He had decided to speak publicly about his personal support for gay marriage sometime before the Democratic convention in early September.

The White House and Obama's presidential campaign at first tried to play down Biden's remarks, insisting that the vice president had gone no further in support of equal rights for same-sex couples. But gay rights advocates latched onto Biden's remarks, declaring him the highest-ranking U.S. official to support gay marriage.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan, a longtime friend of the president, stirred the political pot further on Monday, declaring unequivocally that he also supported gay marriage.

By Tuesday morning, the president came to the conclusion that he couldn't stay silent on the issue any further. The White House hastily arranged a television interview with ABC News for Wednesday, during which Obama explained to the public that he had decided it was important for him to "affirm that same-sex couples should be able to get married."

It's comical to watch republicans on this thread get all outraged about Obama flip floping on gay marriage even though he was always for equal rights and protections for gay couples.

Polls show the whole country has and is evolving on gay marriage. I guess all the people in the entire country who have evolved on gay marriage are flip floppers according to these republicans.

What makes it comical is they must truly despise their candidate for president and his evolving positions on every conceivable issue if they are outraged at the presidents evolution on gay marriage.

Point...Laugh...

The President will get a boost from this announcement primarily because as republicans defending their bigotry, independents who favor gay marriage and decide who the next president will be will see the republicans for what they are.

The president will get a boost because he finally did the right thing and because Joe Biden had the heart and the balls to say it first.

Actually the opposite is true and why Biden was right to apologize.  Biden knew the President was for it and rather than let the President make the announcement and get full credit, he robbed him of that opportunity.
Your post proves me right and why Biden was wrong.

Why does he keep apologizing to the president? It should be the other way around.

He's the VP, you don't get ahead of your boss with announcements even if you know he agrees with you.

This isn't obvious to you?

Folks I work with feel Joe had the biggest ___s and thank him forever for what he started...intentional or otherwise. It feels good not having to wait for the president to speak up due to an annoying need for political timing :)

He's after votes, nothing else. Like most of us he doesn't care what people do with their lives, just don't jam it in our faces and get an appropriate label for the union, it's not "marriage"

Curious does anyone know the answer to this - does the IRS tax Code allow Gay Married couples to file jointly?

If they do great - if they do not - then that IS something the President needs to get on right away.

Does Biden's apology mean that the Obama announcement was a brave and courageous act - but the act of a President cornered by his VP into doing the right thing?

Why maybe Biden isn't as stupid as everyone thinks he is.

Just a matter of inappropriate timing on Biden's part and he knows it that's why he apologized. He robbed the President of the opportunity to make the announcement at a time of his own choosing.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would really think this wasn't planned out...they floated the balloon and saw the reaction.
The President came out in favor of something that people were asking him to finally take a position on.

Reading some of the comments here, and it seems Obama may have made a political mistake admitting that he doesn't want to discriminate against gay people. Are we really, as a nation, so backwards that support for actual equality gets people riled up against the president?

Finally, the right wingers that accuse Obama of flip-flopping is irony at it's best. It's one thing to change your support for gay marriage based on your experience dealing with people (if Obama was ever really against it in the first place). It's another to change your stance on every single conceivable issue solely based on the constituency you're trying to get votes from.

LMFAO @ conservatives losing their collective minds over Obama's statement. It's hilarious that you all are posting non stop about this message, claiming it's a diversion away from the real topics that Obama doesn't want to address because he's failed there. And yet... you all can't stop talking about gay marriage now!! LOL!!! Suckers don't even know when they've been played!!! LMAO!!!

Nice try.
You just take him at his word because you do not know any better. You would be saying something like " What's the matter have nothing to say" if no one was responding.

Obama is wrong again…
A civil union is what we all get when we are married in the eyes of the state period. Marriage is a commitment to each other in the eyes of God, and this is clear and is not open to having "Reservations about your religion" as Obama has stated in the past. It is 100% clear! This is a all out assault on Marriage. Most Gay people do not believe in God or they will rewrite the word of God or choose what to believe that fits what they feel comfortable with, Just like Obama. God does not hate the person, and we should not. The sin is what is to be hated and detested.
As stated by Obama this would make them a whole citizen to be able to marry instead of just civil union. So I ask this question…. Is this something that someone so smart and a self proclaimed Christian would "evolve" to?

Good - then all civil marriage should be outlawed, and you can get married in your fricken church.
