About Mark Lanegan

As a founding member of Screaming Trees and The Gutter Twins, and through a variety of other musical collaborations, Mark Lanegan has left an indelible mark on American contemporary music.

Born on November 25, 1964 in Ellensburg, Washington, Mark grew-up listening to country and folk albums by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and The Kingston Trio. In high school, his love of punk and garage rock led him to meet future Screaming Trees band mates Van and Gary Lee Conner. The Trees - along with peers Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney – helped define the Seattle "Grunge" scene, adding their own psychedelia-infused take on the region's prevailing sound. The band hit pay dirt with their 1992 album Sweet Oblivion. The album's first single, "Nearly Lost You", peaked at #5 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and helped propel the album to 300,000 in domestic sales.

1990 saw Mark's first solo release, The Winding Sheet, followed in 1994 by Whiskey for the Holy Ghost, and thereafter by 1998's Scraps At Midnight, 1999's I'll Take Care of You, 2001's Field Songs and 2004's Bubblegum.

In 2001, Mark began a long collaboration with another heavy outfit, Queens of the Stone Age, whose leader, Josh Homme, briefly played rhythm guitar in Screaming Trees Mark contributed to the Queens' breakout album Rated R, and subsequent releases Songs for the Deaf and Lullabies To Paralyze before moving on to another project, The Gutter Twins, with Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers founder Greg Dulli. The duo released a full-length album, Saturnalia, in 2008 on Seattle's Sub Pop imprint (one-time home to Screaming Trees).

In recent years, Mark also has also collaborated with former Belle & Sebastian vocalist-cellist Isobel Campbell on 3 albums, and appeared as a featured vocalist on the Soulsaver's acclaimed 2007 release It's Not How Far You Fall, It's How You Land as well as their 2009 album, Broken. Mark is currently working on his next solo album, which is tentatively slated for a fall 2011 release.
